PortableApps Backup doesn't back up file with no extension

I use Cryptainer portably (love it) and on my USB stick's root drive, have a 2Gb encrypted volume that has no file extension. I don't know how that works, but it does. This volume contains all my project work, plus my password safe.

I also just switched to use PortableApps Backup to back up my USB stick. I discovered this morning, to my horror, that it does not copy this project file. Everything else is there except this one. I just assumed it would copy everything on my stick. Does it need a file extension to back up those bytes? If so, why? I know I can do a straight drag-and-drop to copy the file, but would it be possible for Backup to handle it routinely?

(This is a problem for me. I left my USB stick at home and needed this project volume to continue my work and to access my passwords. My commute is an hour long and I carpool, so I can't just go get it... which is one reason why I back up my stick so regularly, expecting to be able to continue working if I forget that little thing or somehow lose it, or it wears out.)

disaster averted!

At least you discovered the issue BEFORE the memory stick died so now you can get it sorted.

Personally, I'd just write a batch file to copy all the files off the stick to a location using Robocopy or 7-zip the whole thing.

PortableApps Backup uses 7-zip....

... as an option. I tried again yesterday, a full backup using the 7-Zip option, and saw that my projects folder was being compressed, but I has to abort the process after three hours so I could catch my ride home. Three hours! And aborting it means nothing is saved from the whole process. That's enough for me.

I was hoping a backup utility would be able to make the process more efficient, not less. Oh, well. Lesson learned.

Cheers!

Does Cryptainer use ...

the normal portableapps.com file formats? If it does, then have that file that you said didn't get backedup in the App Data or Documents folder. The PAM backup process of just targeting those sections always saved everything there.

Nope

If it's a 7-Zip bug, Toucan will have the exact same issue.

It

depends, Toucan uses the * wildcard rather than *.* specifically to gget extensionless files.

Same Here

I know, so does PortableApps.com Backup. The issue here may be the actual file size. Read my comment below... I already confirmed PortableApps.com Backup gets extensionless files.

extensionless files work

Extensionless files work just fine. I know this was originally a bug with a pre-release version of PortableApps.com Backup so I was pretty sure this was sorted a while ago. So, I just tried it out and it worked as expected.

The only thing I can think of is if it's an issue within 7-Zip itself, perhaps related to file size (a 2GB file is a bit unusual, so it could be an unreported bug). Can you try just using 7-Zip to backup the drive? If it's too slow, try it in store mode - aka no compression - and if that works, maybe I can add that in as an option. No compression may be your only option as a 2GB file with any compression utility will take a very long time to compress.

I checked just compressing a 2GB file with the default 7z options in 7-Zip and it said it would take 1/2 hour. Setting it to 'store' it would only take a couple minutes.
