No Internet Connection at Work

I just downloaded Portable Apps this weekend at home. I thought it would be a great way to keep my personal info separate from my work info. Firefox worked beautifully at home, and I was really excited.

Then I tried it today at work and I get a "Server not found" error everytime I try to access any page in Firefox. I know it probably has to do with the network configuration here, but I don't know much about how it's set up and there isn't anyone to ask. I used the Get Proxy Utility on the Firefox support page and it didn't come back with anything. Changing the tools->options->network->settings doesn't do anything. My computer is plugged into a switch. Other components plugged into the switch are the other office computers, two servers, the DSL modem, and a Firebox (I have a feeling the Firebox is the problem). Norton Internet Security is also installed on my computer, but I don't think that's the problem because it will prompt if it's blocking an application from the internet. I should also let you know that I don't have Administrator privileges on this computer.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

The problem was the lack of

The problem was the lack of administrative privileges. At least on this network, you need to be a system administrator to run some of the programs in Portable Apps.

most of the apps here ...

can be run on limited accounts. Is it that your work doesn't let you use usbs? Or do you have _everything_ configured correctly? Firewall blocking usb?

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

Probably your work computer

Probably your work computer is configured to connect to a specific proxy in the Internet Explorer settings, which Mozilla Firefox cannot retrieve by itself.

I'm pretty sure that's what is blocking you from accessing the Internet.

In IE, go to Tools - Internet

In IE, go to Tools - Internet Options - Connections Tab - Click LAN Setting - Under proxy settings you'll see an address box. Highlight and copy that address and note the port number.

Now in FF, go to Tools - Options - Advanced "Tab" - Network Tab - Under Connections click Settings. Click the "Manual Proxy Configuration" button. Paste your address in the box. Type in the port number. And check the "Use this proxy for all protocols".

Note this is for IE7 and FF3, but should be the same for other versions. It should not have anything to do with administrator privileges.

It depends if the system

It depends if the system policies on the workstation is not letting him access the proxy settings in IE6/7.
