PA.com FF Search Plugin Permission

OK, here goes. I'm trying to make a Portable Apps Search Plugin for Firefox (this could be an excercise in futility, but I seem to do that for a living anyway :D), it seems I need a little more info:

1. John, do I need permission for this? (copyright/tradmark issue probs etc.)

and 2. Does Drupal use a different search syntax or something? I can't seem to figure it out. I'm looking for something like this: input name="qt" user="", where 'qt' would be the search sytax. Anybody have any advice?

Thanks All

Ashes

Hmm

Good idea. I'll definatly use it.
Drupal does this:
https://portableapps.com/search/node/%search_term%
Try that.
John, please give permission. This would be awesome.

Somehow I doubt John would object to you guys using the PortableApps.com icon. Being trademark nazis seems to be more Mozilla's thing.

Oh, you never heard that saying? I know it's a ridiculous thing, but it seems to be pretty common these days. Like, people call Disney "copyright nazis" because they're so protective of their copyrights. I don't get it either, since it doesn't really have any similarity to real nazis.

Oh well. Whatever.

I never said Mozilla were copyright nazis. Quite the opposite, actually, considering they've triple-licensed Firefox, and all three licenses are open-source. However, they've lately been a little too zealous when it comes to protecting the Firefox trademark. Try modifying Firefox (even just to fix a bug) and releasing it yourself--they won't let you call the modified version Firefox; they won't even give you the right to say it's "based on Firefox."

I read on Slashdot that a while ago, they sent cease-and-desist letters to everybody selling T-shirts and stuff with the Firefox name and/or logo on them. Ridiculous. I can see protecting the trademark from people that might call a completely unrelated product Firefox (or even a sabotaged build of the official browser), but the T-shirt thing? That's just poorly-disguised greed. Alienating your fans is one of the worst things you can do as an open-source company, especially since in most cases fans of open-source products are into the whole "freedom" thing themselves. Don't take away our freedom or we'll find something else in a hurry.

So yeah: trademark nazis.

'Find something else in a hurry'

Like Internet Explorer 7 (or is it 8? or maybe 6?)
That is a blatent ripoff of Firefox's GUI.

Very funny.

I meant something else open-source, smartass. Open-source zealots (the most likely people to be very unhappy with Mozilla's trademark policy) are idealists to the core and I seriously doubt they would replace Firefox with IE. Blum On the same token, they are idealists, and Mozilla's trademark policy quite visibly conflicts with those ideals. A lot of such zealots just won't stand for it.

I am not, however, an open-source zealot. I'll gladly use a non-free product if it's superior. Still, even I'm not thrilled with Mozilla's trademark policy, for the simple reason that they're an open-source company. You don't release something under a GPL-type license and then restrict the ways in which people can exercise their rights under that license ("oh, you can freely modify the code, but don't use our name, not even to give us credit for the original code"). Not exactly a smart thing to do in my mind. Red Hat does the same thing, and I'm none too happy about that, either.

Oh, and IE7 hardly has any similarity to Firefox other than the existence of tabs (which every modern browser should have). Toolbars inside the tabs? Some command buttons inside the tab, some outside? To call IE7's absolutely horrendous interface a ripoff of the Firefox GUI is an insult to Firefox.

Good point

But, they stole the search bar too.
You know, just so my family would use FF instead of IE7, I renamed the tabs.dll to tabs.pblhsmghd
Worked mighty fine.

"Ripoff" to me suggests a near-perfect copy (that is, no originality whatsoever). To compare Firefox and IE7 in this way is insulting Firefox.

In actuality, IE7 is a horrendous amalgamation of Firefox and Opera. Opera is the only other browser I've seen that has toolbars both inside and outside the tab. The difference is that Opera got it right.

That's cool

Hey Ashes,

I was actually planning on making one when I got back from Russia, but feel free to make one available and use the logo. I'll add it into the site and put a place for it to update from on PortableApps.com when I get back to the states.

Thanks,
John

Hey, guys. Anyone interested

Hey, guys. Anyone interested in beta testing? It works in my tests, but because I had to adjust it a little for Drupal, the validater on Mindzilla dosen't like it. Biggrin I was hoping someone else would take it for a test drive before I let it out all official like. And, if anyone has anyexperiance with this, I was hoping someone could improve on it. Thanks!

Hope you guys have fun!

Direct Download for Plugin

Edit: For those that do not know, you need to place the .src file and the graphic in the 'searchplugins' directory under the 'firefox' directory.

It's ok now.

Works fine now. Can't wait to try this out later...

Later that same day...
Works great. I had to close PFF and restart 2x for it to show up on the list, but now everything is great! Good job, Ashes!

one search problem

that I've noticed is that it appears to only search the text of a message. I tried to search for my ID (azjerry) and got only those threads where I was mentioned. I didn't get those threads that participated in as a message author. I'm sure that's a function of the search itself, not the plugin.

Correct.

It is the search itself. I've tried multiple tests, and every time come up with the same results(this site or plugin).

*Ashes, shoot me an email. I have a couple of ideas about your hosting options.*

Beta Version Officially?

Hey John, I've been playing with this plugin and I think it's ready for a beta release. Can I make an official 'announcement' or something in the General Forums? I didn't want to release it before you were ready for it. And thanks, all, for the support and being willing to play guinea pig! When (if) I can release it I'll include a more comprehensive readme; but for the user search problem there is a work around: if you search for a name in it, while it will bring up the posts in which that name was mentioned, you can also click 'User', select the name, then click 'Track'. I know, I know, thats at least two clicks too many, but I am working on it. I do have Drupal around somewhere, I just never got around to insalling it (I actually found it before I started posting here, lol. I suppose I must chalk it up to some serious procrastination.). So I'll start studying that. But later. Biggrin

Later!
