Autorun malfunctioning

Hey guys

I downloaded the 1.1 platform standard edition and it worked quite well at first. However now the auto run feature isn't working. I mean the autorun mennu wont even come up. I downloaded the basic platform and reinstall to redo the platform without affecting my apps and for the smaller download:) Still the autorun menu wont come up when I insert my USB. Can someone please help me?

Many thanks

Disabled

Autorun could very well be disabled on that machine. (No, I'm not sure how to turn it back on)

Hey Patrick I hope it is

Hey Patrick

I hope it is that. I've used the autorun feature on this pc before and it has worked Sad

However just asked a couple guys here at the office at found out the IT group did some changes overnight so the disablement of the autorun feature could be the reason. Will try on home pc tonight and see how goes.

Thanks for the quick reply

Did you delete the .INI file?

If the menu does not autorun either you have autorun disabled on your system(i can't help you) or you deleted a file on your flash drive called autorun.ini. Some people might delete it because they don't know what it does.
If you remember deleting that file you need to re-install the PortableApps launchpad unless you are a computer professional like me.

solved already

Edwin,

He already reported his problem solved on June 1st.
(the autorun is fine, it was his work computer)
Did you not read the whole thread or am I missing something?

More of the same

I am having the same issue on my laptop. I have 4 computers in the house, and the autorun seems to work on the other three but not on my laptop. The label and icon lines in the autorun do work properly but the open and action lines seem to do absolutely nothing. I have downloaded a microsoft utility that is supposed to correct all autorun issues but it has not corrected anything. Please help me with this.

Thanks
Blaise

autorun changed

Hey,
my problem seems to be slightly different, but I would be happy to get some tips. Autorun (version 1.1) worked well on a lot of computers, but now on several computers at my workplace the contents of the autorun.inf file gets overwritten at the moment I connect my flash drive. I change it back - no effect. The file is write protected. I change it - no effect, the file remains write protected. I can't even delete the file. I mean, I can delete it, but after some seconds it is restored. Is it the normal behavior of autorun.inf, or a result of some infection, or what?

I put the new contents of the file here:

[autorun]
open=RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1482476501-1644491937-682003330-1013\autorun.exe
icon=%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll,4
action=Open folder to view files
shell\open=Open
shell\open\command=RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1482476501-1644491937-682003330-1013\autorun.exe
shell\open\default=1

Thank you for any idea.

My guess

is that that autorun.exe gets deleted cause maybe the PC mistakes it for a virus. But autorun.exe isnt one of the PortableApps.com-Platform's programms so I dont know. What does reinstalling the Platform do? If the file is write protected and you cant unlock it, what happens if you login at a PC with Admin rights. Does it work then?

autorun.exe !!!

Portable apps does not provide an autorun.exe file.
Did you put a file named autorun.exe into the autorun.inf ???
i.e. did you perhaps rename the portable apps menu file [i forget what it's called at the moment] to autorun.exe ?

If not, i.e. You have no idea what that file is, I think this would be cause for concern.

A possible solution

Something I found that helped solve this problem when it reoccurred was copying the original contents of autorun.ini into any notepad or word or writer doc and saving it into my documents folder.

Whenever the autorun is modified either by computer interaction with it (Not human) or simply not correctly ejecting the USB, I simply open the autorun.ini and paste the text from the doc into it. This seems to fix the problem everytime and is a lot easier than reinstalling the base menu as I was doing for a while.

Hope this helps :o)

Virus

Thank you, everybody. Now I see, it is a virus. On my home pc Kaspersky identified the infection, but wasn't able to delete it. So I had to format the drive. Luckily I'm a bit paranoid in making backups. Smile

I am having a problem with my

I am having a problem with my autorun starting. I was attempting to install TrueCrypt on my drive so that not everyone would have access to my information. Well it stated that there was a problem with set up and that I would have to format the drive in order to use it again. Luckily I had copies of all of my information so I wasn't all that worried about it. Once I re-installed everything, the auto run feature doesn't work. I can actually see that the file is there, but when I plug the drive into my computer it does nothing. When I go into My Computer I can see the drive and access PA if I double click the PA icon, but the drive icon doesn't change like it normally does (it would show the PA symbol). Any thoughts?

Please disregard! I stepped away from my computer while I was rebooting it again, and when i came back it decided to allow autorun to work. So, for now all seems to be ok.
Thanks anyways.

autorun.ini

I removed some virus from my portable usb
device and deleted the autorun.ini which
pointed to the virus, the attributes of the file
were set to hidden, system and read-only by the virus.
After deleting autorun.ini and removing the viruses I
downloaded and installed the light version of the
PortableApps platform and it recognized the installed
portable applications.

The file autorun.ini installed by PortableApps
is this:

[AutoRun]
open=StartPortableApps.exe
Action=Start PortableApps.com
Icon=StartPortableApps.exe
Label=PortableApps.com
