The School IT has gone nuts!

Today, I found that the School IT installed SonicWall. It's features are:

  • Blocking websites by category.
  • Disallowing Proxies
  • Disallowing IP/Hex addresses
  • Hardware based (shudders)

The School finally wised up to stuff, but now they are even blocking legit sites, like this site that has the value of e. The blocked it because it said the category was nudism!!! I don't get how the value of e has anything to do with that.
Does anyone know how to bypass it?
It blocks proxies.

Well.

It's not nuts, I just think their DNS server is a little restrictive. Anyhow, just add FoxyProxy to your Firefox addons and see if you can use a proxy that way. If not, try Tor (using FoxyProxy as well).

Tried FoxyProxy

on my friend's U3. Didn't work. But he was at least happy that he launched firefox and didn't have to use Internet Exploder for the day :D.

well i have to first

well i have to first congratulate your IT guys, they might have build the 1 blocking application better than the 1 we have at our school

while i do no condone beating blocks and internal proxies (because I helped build the 1 in our school)i do knew several ways around them

first of all i could not b block all proxies, I have a list of at least 30 not so common ones that I have found building our blocks, so I will dig them up and post them when I get a chance.

second try Tor portable with the tor button add on for FF, it works miracles but you might have to mess with the settings and set a specific port.

and lastly if you can try different IP addresses on the computers your on

(ONLY IS THIS IS YOUR PERSONAL COMPUTER MESSING WITH SCHOOL COMPUTERS IN THIS WAY WILL GET YOU IN TROUBLE)

on the blocks I helped set up we have a safe zone for teachers and staff that uses a 10.0.10.X Ip while all the little kiddies are on a 192.168.X.X or a dynamic IP,
the dynamic and 192's get blocked and the complete list of the sites the go on is saved for review anytime needed, I get it emailed to me to look for new sites to block

but a 10.0 Ip is unblocked and can access any kind of site

this may or may not be the case in your situation but if you need to get past it that badly, some of this might do it, or inspire you or someone else on how to get past it

Lead, Follow, or get out of the way.

Um...

Yeah, it's a hardware solution.
It blocks by category, so it blocks every proxy.

well i would definitly try my IP idea with a hardware box, because they usually set some IPs to go through so they can go to those sites if they need to

I hate SonicWall

If you want to get around it, TOR is the way to go. Slow, but it works.
Try xB Browser (formerly known as TORPark).

On the flip side, for something better(IMHO)than SonicWall try Untangle.

Being in IT, I would just suggest forgetting about trying to bypass it. It was put there for a reason and you really shouldn't try to mess with it. The site that you are trying to get to, is it a valid school related site? If it is not specifically of use for your classes you are in, then you should only visit those sites at home.

We have a packet filter and shaper on our networks here at work and it blocks legit sites for pr0n reasons all the time. However since those legit sites are not work related, i can't just ask them to not block it. It is blocked so people won't surf sites that are not work related and waste costly bandwidth to read about someone dinner party or something.

This advice goes to everyone that is in school or at work trying to bypass security settings on your networks. I have a few tricks being in IT that i use when i need something that is blocked but other than actual tools that I use at work, i don't bypass it for anything else. downloading here at work is unstable but it is more stable through specific means so I down at home and then upload to stable servers.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you do or say will be exaggerated or mis-quoted and used against you.

Yup.

They blocked a math website because they thought it got categorized as nudism!
And they blocked the math games that I like to play (Orb2 and Coffee Shop).
At least they didn't block GMail.

Oh, okay.

But I still need a proxy that's not well known, available to me (Patrick put a pass on his), and works.

to me it sounds like...

a typical day wrestling with my schools Surf Control. they have also disabled a bunch of other stuff but since i can acsess my email on DesktopTwo at school, i can get working proxies. i also seem to have found a loop hole in surfcontrol that i notified "Benet Halsten" on peacfire (the provider of my emailed proxies) about and he quickly took advantage of it Blum

Only harder.

SonicWALL is hardware-based. It's nothing like I've seen before.

SonicWALL

Our school uses SonicWALL too, but someone found a way around it. For some reason going to the proxy server page on Wikipedia and clicking on the next to the last link on the page brings you to a bunch of proxies that it won't block. Don't know if it'll work for you, but it works at my school.

Well

Alot of hardware firewalls (that what this amounts to, a firewall) are linux based. with that in mind, seeing how you'll get in trouble anyway, you could attack the linux operating system with a malicious script/controller program/another-word-for-virus and get access that way... with possible jail time and/or account suspension, seeing how that would be disabling a government monitoring system.
...
On second though... forget i said anything... (;) but good luck though)

I'm not sure SonicWALL would use Linux.

Try um..... 5 is today. I'm going to try those proxies that urlacher3292 showed me. Wish me luck! (Wait, you already did :P)

I figured it out :D

you can do nslookup in cmd, and copy the IP.
But it only works on sites classified as 'custom admin'
Other than that, it blocks by category, making it impossible.
