#portableapps - *skinned* IRC client for discussion and support

Hi all,

I've been working on a skin for the Mibbit IRC client, which can be embedded into webpages. Mibbit uses Javascript and AJAXy type things, which makes it very fast, and means you don't need to have Java/Flash, or a fullblown client. I think that this would be a good option for support, and from other discussion on this channel, I believe that John agrees.

Without further ado, here it is. Set up to go straight to irc.freenode.net, #portableapps, and set up with my skin. Smile

I hope that you like it! Hopefully with something like this we'll get better support options for our users.

You can embed it in webpages; and example of embedding this one in the PortableApps.com support page is here.

Ahhh,

But can you come up with something that doesn't need Java/Flash OR Javascript and AJAXy type things which would make it very secure ;-P

The only option there is a full-blown program like Pidgin - but what if they can't get that working, and that is what they're wanting support for? Blum

Edit: oh, for smileys...
Edit: http://drupal.org/project/smileys - 6.0 has an alpha now!

Sad

Not meaning smileys.

IRC and skin, you could just check it maybe type something, and leave again. But if you don't want to, that's fine.

Sorry

It's not that I don't want to,
but I don't have an account/logon/password or any of that stuff,
as I said, I don't do IRC/IM type stuff [I don't even know the difference between the two], hate it myself, but I'm sure people will be around in the morning to give it a try.

You don't actually need to register.

(Most) IRC channels don't need registration. #portableapps doesn't. All you need to do is choose a screen name.

Fine

I'll try it tomorrow,

Let's do this set by step.
1. I turn on javascript
2. I allow irc.portableapps.chrismorgan.info/ to use javascript.
3. I go to http://irc.portableapps.chrismorgan.info/

now what?
4.
5.
6.
7.

give details, I haven't done this stuff in years, if I've even done it before Blum

Tim

edit: oh, and from what I recall reading, yes I've been reading, I need to allow IFrames too Sad

List:
  1. You turn on JavaScript
  2. You allow embed.mibbit.com to use JavaScript - irc.portableapps.chrismorgan.info is actually just a redirect I used, as it's a big long string to get the settings ID, which does the skinning. And also so that I can remember it easily. Wink It redirects to http://embed.mibbit.com/?server=irc.freenode.net&channel=%23portableapps... . Do you se why I did it? Blum
  3. You go to http://irc.portableapps.chrismorgan.info/
  4. You give a nickname
  5. You say hello... maybe stay a while... whatever.
  6. You leave.

And no, you don't need to allow iframes; that's only for embedding it in a page (like here). If you're accessing it directly (as you are if you go to http://irc.portableapps.chrismorgan.info/), you don't need iframes.

Hope to see you on there soon! If you go just about now, I'll be on.

Say how you think the client is

I presume that you were the teck... one?

How do you think it will go for the average user? What do you think needs changing (if anything)

teck ?? if that is a nick

teck ??
if that is a nick name, no, I was me, timclark.
I think that is would be fine for an average user but I've got nothing to compare it to.

What can you change, I thought you just came up with the colors and the rest was just "the site", but what do I know Blum

Great!

I like it, as well the colors you've chosen (except for the joined green).
This way to chatting is so simple but clear, perhaps I'm switching.

Nick has joined #portableapps or whatever it says, in the lime green font... if you have the power to change that.

Ah.

Yes, I can change that. I can change everything - even to the point of putting in images for backgrounds! It seems that although the things are meant for colours, it just treats it as CSS, and uses it verbatim, though hopefully it strips any dangerous stuff first! The tab bar, for example, currently uses the header bar from here, and gives it a y-offset of -7px, to get rid of the white at the top and the black border.

I think the pink background

I think the pink background areas, might look better as grey. Also, I was wondering is the size of the embedded one adjustable?

Maybe, yes

I was wondering a bit about the pinks, too. But I think it looks good, so long as it's not fullscreen.

The size is definitely able to be changed - if you look at the source code, you'll see that it's just an iframe tag, with width and height attributes. Mibbit will scale as large as you like.

To much pink.

In reply to your wish . . .
To much pink.

Make the text on the side white, so it offsets the grey more. EDIT-No I see why you did that. Maybe change the highlight?

I do like what you did with the user list.

Did I mention the pink?

Work In Progress... pink lay-offs

Yes, you did mention it. Blum
You see why I did it? The reason I did it was because I've put the image in, but not changed the text colour yet! It's a work in progress, and I was given some statistics work to do by the school principal, so I'm putting that first. I'll fix it soon, though.
My aim is really to get it to look as similar to the PortableApps.com menu as possible/reasonable.

I agree with you about too much pink. The problem is finding a portableappsish colour other than reds and pinks... probably grey.

But to sum up for the people who have commented on IRC but not here: the general response seems to be, it's good, we like it, it'd be helpful, but it'd probably be nice with a little less pink... So I'm going to lay off some of my pink employees. Blum

Oh, for graphical smileys... Sad

Wish it was still here.

I wonder how many people use and install apps from this website. An official (irc) chat might be pretty cool, and allow people to connect.
