Seriously, I ned help here!

I've made a few other posts about parts of this problem, but none have been answered. I really need some advice, since the situation I am now in is that it takes nearly five minutes to start Portable Thunderbird. I need a portable mail client with GnuPG that I can use to *quickly* plug in to a guest PC and get my mail. I need the ability to sign my messages so the recipient can verify that it really *is* from me, even when I am away from my "home" PC.

I downloaded version 1.5.0.2 with Enigmail+GPG after several unsuccessful attempts to install Enigmail in the "Vanilla" version. After a lot of experimenting I found where the Profiles were stored and got my address book and saved mail working. The GnuPG stuff works fine from my "home" PC, but when I connect using a guest PC, it does not sign my messages. That is the object of the whole thing - to be able to send a message from anywhere, and have the recipient able to verify through the GPG signature that it came from me.

Then the UPDATE happened! It never asked, it just downloaded the update, and now whenever I start Portable Thunderbird, I get this 5 minute delay while it tries to update a bunch of files. (Yes, I do have write access to the whole Thunderbird directory structure) Finally the update fails and T'bird starts up as 1.5.0.2.

At best, I would like to get an up-to-date version working. At worst, I would like to revert back to the partially working version I had three days ago.

Please - someone - John? - tell me what I must do to get this thing working again!

TIA

Walt

Good Luck

Doesn't seem like anyone creating portable apps. provide support. They'll help trying to get an application made portable or fix errors in the process. After that the user is on their own!

Shut up, spammer. Your username couldn't be more appropriate. As Thumper once said, If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all.

You're going to get yourself banned, spammer. You're only lucky that John Haller is on vacation.

I think a few of you devs

I think a few of you devs need mod powers, Bruce, if not to ban then at least to censor idiots, and keep things clean and organized. We should bring this up when John gets back, but its petty things like what spammer does that probably makes him (John) nervous to do so. I've been a mod on forums where mod wars have started. Not pretty.

EDIT: Maybe not just devs, but active and helpful members of this community. There are several. And no, I don't want to be a mod. It's a pain. Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt.

Mod wars typically start when a bulletin board has too many active moderators. If the number of active moderators is kept to a minimum, such chaos can usually be prevented.

Go ahead and let it do the full update. It only updates once, if you actually let it.

@ spammer...

Shut Up. You don't do a goddamned thing and have no right to bitch. Just so you know, John, the developer of most of the portable apps here, is on vacation in Russia, and has limited internet access. Have some goddamned patience.

I realize I don't do much either, but If I think I can help, I will, and I have helped with RC testing a bit, recently with Liberta Sync. All you do is bitch and crack off shit at the devs. You don't realize that these devs have a life outside this community, and school and jobs. They are not required to constantly be at your beck and call.

(Note: This summer I have no life. I'm living off my savings and not working or taking summer classes. I'm burned out, and need an extended vacation. I'll be doing some travelling myself, like John, but not so far (cross country road trip) But I still have a right to point the above out, because I work damn near full time as a tutor almost all year, and go to school with a 21 Credit Hour Schedule [next semester's sched.].)

Note 2: Sorry for the rant, but too many people act like this guy. Here's a clue folks, it's FREE, quit complaining and be glad it's free in the first place.

SHEESH! I just asked for a little help and started a flame war! Cool down, guys.

The touble is (see my other post) that it tries for about 5 minutes, then fails saying

One or more files could not be updated. Please make sure all other applications are closed and that you have permission ot modify files, and then restart Thunderbird to try again.

I would just like to get it to quit trying, at this point. It was working OK before yesterday Sad

Copy the profile to a newly extracted version.

Worth a try because noone else can give a hoot.

I guess, get a virgin copy

It's either not enough free space, or you (sadly) should follow spammer's advice.
I guess, you could get a virgin copy off of here, copy prof and plugins directories from data folder, and disable updates in options.

Oy.

GO THE HELL AWAY, SPAMMER!

I don't usually lose my cool, but this is getting way out of hand. If you don't stop provoking the other members, I will personally email John Haller to let him know about your behavior and let him deal with it. And that's a promise.

Edit:
I can't believe I didn't figure it out sooner. You signed up purposely just to antagonize us, spammer. In that case I can assure you that you won't be staying here too much longer. Enjoy the ride while it lasts.

@walts
The reason the update is failing is likely because you don't have enough free space on your drive. I believe I read somewhere that you need at least 40 MB of free space for the update to succeed, but that figure may be off. It's a decent chunk of free space you need, at any rate.

Thanks!

Thanks, fatcerberus. Smile That did the trick. By freeing up space on the USB stick, it first tried the upgrade, then the complete update, which worked.

As for "Spammer" - we should just ignore dolts like this. They are only here for the attention!

Don't make multiple posts about the same thing; it only ticks off the community. If you must draw attention to your question, bump the post, but please don't make a bunch posts asking the same question.

I don't believe that was your point. If it was, you may need to take an effective communications class. It seemed to me that you were being an ass becasue the devs have lives outside this place.

Are there no other mods besides John?

If not, there definitely needs to be.

@spammer - you've been here just under 2 weeks, and have yet to post a single, constructive comment. Everything you've posted thus far has been in keeping with your chosen nick.

Spammers and trolls are most definitely NOT welcome anywhere. Please do this community a favor: find yourself another nick, preferably something a little more social, and post in keeping with that nick. Up until now, there really haven't been very many trolls or spammers, if any at all, in this community, and I'm sure we'd like it kept that way.

Spammer banned

I've banned spammer. Looks like he started acting up while I was in St Petersburg when I didn't have consistent internet access (I only hopped on once).

I'm currently evaluating upgrading a couple accounts to forum mod status... the more helpful folks on here are the obvious candidates... that will be a new topic. I'd been hoping to avoid any modding if possible, but as the community grows, it becomes a bigger target for trolls. Eventually, it will simply be a necessity.

In the future, if a troll crops up and is obviously trying to get a rise out of others, just ignore them and don't respond. The more you do, the more they troll. Hence the classic expression PDFTT (Please Don't Feed The Troll).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Do you know how hard it is not to feed trolls? It's like when your parents tell you as a kid to just ignore the bully and he'll go away... it doesn't work.

Hey man, no problem. You

Hey man, no problem. You guys do some damn good stuff around here. I think you guys are some prime choices. I wish I had this stuff down like you. I've been trying out some NSIS stuff, but It's been rocky. You're all "outside-the-box" thinkers, too. I couldn't come up with a lot of this stuff.

If I were being graded on this stuff, I'd learn it, but even then, you guys would prolly have me beat. I just appreciate all you guys do, especially the apps, heheh! Keep em coming, and keep up the same great quality. Especially you Libertá guys. And John of course. And you three would prolly do a damn fine job of helping John with the forums. He's a busy guy, and can't always be around. It would be good if someone could take some of the stress off of him. It has to be there. (the stressm that is)
