Bookmarks in Firefox 3.0 Portable

Hi,

I'd like to know where the bookmarks file for FF 3 Portable is stored. I tried modifying the one under /Data/profile....it doesn't seem to be working.

Thanks.

They're stored in a sqlite

They're stored in a sqlite database now. You can't "hand edit" files anymore. You need to edit all bookmarks thru the apps interface (Bookmark -> Organize Bookmark). The file you edited must be a leftover from FF 2.x which was probably imported by the installer and then left abandoned (that's a guess).

That sucks

Firstly, thanks for the reply.

That sqlite DB way of storing bookmarks seriously sucks!!!

I have a LOT of bookmarks in my FF 2 installation...creating all of them again using the UI will be painful.

Heh, I'll probably have to create a dummy delicious account, export my bookmarks to delicious, and import them again in FF 3. (Am I a genius or what?? :D)

Cheers.

When you install FF3 over the

When you install FF3 over the top of FF2, it imports the bookmarks automagically.

Your workaround is too much work IMO...

(Least amount of work if it works out)

1) "Export" the bookmarks in FF2
2) Import the bookmarks file into IE
3) FF3 can import bookmarks straight from IE

OR

(More work if the above doesn't work)

1) "Export" the bookmarks in FF2
2) Open the bookmark.html file in FF3
3) Right click on each link and do "Bookmark this link"

FYI: mozStorage is what is now storing bookmarks in the SQLite DB. It will be used for MUCH more than bookmarks moving forward in the Gecko/Mozilla engine and add-ons.

EDIT:

There's a third and better way to get bookmarks from FF2 into FF3 if they weren't automagically imported on install of FF3. This will work well when you need to get bookmarks from IE or FF2 into Portable Firefox3 also.

1) "Export" the bookmarks in FF2 to the standard bookmarks.html file
2) In FF3 do "Bookmarks" -> "Organize Bookmarks" -> "Import and Backup" -> "Import HTML"
3) Navigate to the bookmarks.html file you created in Step #1

I really liked the way

I really liked the way firefox handles all bookmarks as a simple, portable html file.
is there a way to export bookmarks from firefox 3 to html?

Yep...

In FF3 go "Bookmarks" -> "Organize Bookmarks" -> "Import and Backup" -> "Export HTML"

Not Really ;)

I just changed your method a little in order to point him the way to export instead of importing bookmarks.
Take a closer look.

I gotta read closer..."import" vs "export".

Bookmarks aren't saved in FF3

I had no problem with FF3 bringing in my bookmarks from FF2, that all happened automatically.

But when using FF3 and using "bookmark this page", and then check the bookmarks, to see if it was there, it would appear where I filed it, but it doesn't save anywhere, because when I close FF down and restart, my new bookmarks don't appear.

It was just those new ones created in FF3 that aren't being saved.
Although my history would be saved and would be on hand for the next session.

However, if I did a backup under "organise bookmarks" (it didn't matter where I chose to save it), this event would somehow trigger a save action in one of those sqlite files, because the next time I start FF3, the new bookmarks would appear. (note: I did not do a restore, that was not required) it just seems that the backup procedure triggers the save in the relevant sqlite file.
