For some reason, the Freetype plugin was removed from the 2.4 release of GIMP (thus it's also missing in the portable app version). I don't know what the GIMP guys were thinking as I and many others use it often, but anyway... After a bit of searching, I managed to find a way to put Freetype back in 2.4.6 (Windows only). Just download the plugin from here then move freetype.exe to GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins. Rather roundabout, I know, but if anyone has an easier method feel free to post it. ^^
I copied the freetype plugin to f:\Apps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins where f = flash drive or location drive.
when I started the plugin directly it complains cannot find libgimp-2.0-0.dll which is at: f:\Apps\GIMPPortable\App\gimp\bin\libgimp-2.0-0.dll
OK something daft now I found the plug in in GIMP - i.e. Filters - Text, then Freetype. Question now answered myself.

The FreeType plugin has been discontinued and is no longer maintained. GIMP's default and supported method going forward is to use the GIMP text tool. More here:

They've discontinued it? Pity. The text tool is good, yeah, but the main reason I use FreeType is because it allows you to configure the font table — ie. you can also use fonts that have not been installed. AFAIK, the text tool only uses the installed fonts and doesn't give you any options to change them.
That sounds like a feature request we should make of the GIMP folks since it would be very handy. Wanna post a note in the tracker?

I'd be glad to make the suggestion as it is something that I need, but I'm not exactly sure where to post that suggestion. You said tracker... is that GIMP's Bugzilla tracker?
I'm sure they have a feature suggestion tracker in the bug tracker. I don't recall if they are using SourceForge's or not offhand.

Well I have it in both Portable and regular Gimp......I guess I copied it from my previous version.....and I agree that it is a nice plugin, that works well now....
