Pre-Release 1 (2008-06-10): Initial release
[updated title (pre-release 3) - moderator PP]
I've just had a few minutes to play around with it (actually only got to try out the tutorial) on vista ultimate sp1. I got a runtime error the first time I completed the tutorial, but I wasn't able to duplicate it so I'm assuming it was just a momentary hick-up that was caused by coming out of standby mode. It doesn't leave anything obvious behind either.
The only minor thing I noticed is that the splash screen is still the development test splash.
o my god!!!!!!!!!!
how could i forget?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Edit: Fixed...wrong link sorry...
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
I've tried the one you've just linked to on vista ultimate sp1, and it works well and leaves nothing behind either.
I've also tried it on windows xp sp3 and windows 98 se. Because I have both of those operating systems running through Microsoft Virtual PC they ran a little sluggish but didn't give any errors and left nothing obvious behind
Out of bordom I also tried launching it with my windows 95 virtual machine. For what it's worth it crashed on launch and this is what I got out of the error log:

I guess this thing's been a dev test for so long, you put Development Test 1 in the Release notes.
Unfortunately, I don't have a plug-in keyboard (all laptops), so I can't test.
But I'm glad this project's finally a clean app, it's been so long...
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
Why can't you just use the laptop's keyboard?
because you can't hold it like a guitar. with a normal keyboard you can use the F1-F5 keys and the enter key and it's like a guitar controller.
lol, i still wanna see someone try that.
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
I'd like to see that, I never do this, I play without picking it up, and I've played for approx. one year...
Hi, I tried adding a folder with songs into Data\settings\songs and they did not show up. It worked when placing the folder with one song in the Data\settings\songs folder. Are there limitations to the folder structure?
Sometimes I get an in game error "The system cannot find the path specified: 'data\\songs/*.*'"
This had something to do because I put the fretsonfire in the root of the drive and not PortableApps subfolder.
Edit: hmm its not because its in the wrong folder apparently... Trying to check some more. Hmm maybe the problem came because of a corrupted music or something...
Edit 2: I think I found the problem.. its because I placed a shortcut to the portable exe on my desktop...
u fixed it right?
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
I thought I fixed it. But now the game starts in a folder and when I leave the folder the 3 demo songs are visible but not the folder. I think the earlier problem was FoF not able to find the folder that was previously played. But now the root music folder ingame doesnt show the folder that contains the musics...
At this time I need to put one song in the Subfolder and then it shows the folder in the ingame browser...
Hmm why doesnt a folder inside \Data\settings\songs which contaions different songs work... like \Data\settings\songs\first10songs then \Data\settings\songs\more songs with each subfolder having more than one tune. This only seems to work if the \Data\settings\songs folder includes a subfolder with a song...
i think I might try it with a regular non portable version also to see if this is a problem is with the portable version specifically.
The current splash is a bit ho-hum. What do you think of this one?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
should i post a new pre-release for it?
or just a launcher with the splash?
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
You can if you'd like. But it can wait til the final or next PR (it's not a code change).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I'm not sure if these will make Frets On Fire any less portable, but you can find Mods and extra songs for FOF at www.fretsonfire.net (moderator please remove link if not appropriate). I already use the non- Portable version of FOF and have found the site to be extremely good.
P.S. In order to get extra songs for Frets on Fire, you will have to register with the forum.
check release notes for changes

The game works ONLY if built-in mods are not used! As soon as I enable both Light Graphics (which reduces processing load) & Chilly (I like the blue theme) mods, the game breaks down & pumps out an error message.
The only way to get the game work again is to delete everything & reinstall the game.
I have NOT tried to install any additional mods or songs to the game, most because I'm uncertain where to place them with the odd methods of making it portable.
THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN ADDRESSED WITH PREVIOUS (DT) VERSIONS
I strongly suggest that the mod issue gets fixed, even if you have to remove the built-in mods (forcing me to install them separately from the game files, which is likely the case would be) to prevent people from suffering this problem!
Otherwise, you'll get a lot of complaints upon release this!
SUPPLEMENTAL: I would additionally suggest reworking the PAM icon for this. For some reason the blue fuzzy circle around the F doesn't work. It just shows a butchered F for the icon. It's just a cosmetic issue, so it doesn't have to be addressed immediately.

I have NOT tried to install any additional mods or songs to the game, most because I'm uncertain where to place them with the odd methods of making it portable.
by odd you also mean the standard ways of making this app portable right
ok to add songs you hav to put the song folder in Data\settings\songs folder
MainFOFPortable
-Data
--settings
---songs
----yousongfolderhere
----twibmpg
----etc
hope that helped
Edit: About the mods i downloaded the regular app and when i tried to change the mod it would not work, it would crash anyway. I will test on other machines
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
The main reason why I said odd is that Frets on Fire Portable current uses a compressed executable since like DT 7 or so that throws the conventional (non-portable) file structure out of whack. I'll give that a spin, assuming I can resist the urge of placing mods with the portable version & totally destroying it (forcing me to delete & re-install it).
The non-portable version I have (1.2.415, RF-Mod 4) works perfectly fine. I can change the mods on it with little issues. It does lag a bit while the changes are put into effect, but that's about it.

Do we have any position on this?

i am running into a weird problem...

i am not sure is there a different way one is implemented?
thanks

I've just been playing with this on my laptop running Ubuntu. There was absolutely no problem installing or running it using wine 1.0. I can't wait until this has been officially released.
I was played this game earlier on my system which contains windows 98 as operating systems. But now i have seen this new version of the game, right now i am using the windowsXP is it suitable for this new version of the game or else any new version is required to this to play like Vista.
check the release notes for more info

Besides adding a note within FoF Portable's help files on where to place songs & mods, you're pretty much ready for an official release!
The only thing I would like to see would be version 1.2.451_RF4.15 offered instead of the standard... or at least instruction making this work with FoF Portable myself.

and really thanks for all the help and time that you hav put into helping me out with this release
I am actually thinking of supporting the Alarian mod because it has more options
wat do u think
Please search before posting. ~Thanks
I haven't heard of the Alarian mod, but a quick search for has given me the quick runover...
The Alarian Mod is essentially a rewrite of the Ultimate Coffee mod, which was a mod of the RF_mod... so it's a 3rd Generation mod, so I can totally understand why you want to go with that. Especially since the RF_Mod is practically dead since the creator of it has joined the FoF dev team.
I'll definitely give the mod a spin with the standard version this weekend & I'll try to give you my thoughts on Monday... barring any major allergy attack (with harvest in full swing).

I gave the FoF Alarian Mod a spin over the weekend & I believe that I can give a honest evaluation of it.
I like all the options it provides. While they're a bit overwhelming for new users, those who are a bit adventurous would likely enjoy them. It also gives more of the Guitar Hero / Rock Band feel that a lot of users would be used to, including the performance requirements & star power.
On the other hand, the Altarian Mod provides all this for some pretty hefty requirements. First of all is space requirements.
FoF 1.2.415, Zipped / Unzipped -- ~34.1 MB's / ~44.2 MB's
FoF Alarian 2.990, Installer / Installed -- ~198 MB's / ~244 MB's
The Alarian mod is about 5 - 6 times the size of the unmodded version. Considering the size of the songs & song lists, here's the rough figures you'll need for comfort.
Base figures, for all game files -- Unmodded: ~50 MB's / Alarian: ~250 MB's
Guitar Hero 1 Song List: +300 MB's
Guitar Hero 2 Song List: +500 MB's
Guitar Hero 2 XBox 360 Exclusives: + 110 MB's
Guitar Hero 3 Base Song List: + 610 MB's
Guitar Hero 3 Bonus Songs: + 310 MB's
Guitar Hero 80's Song List: + 360 MB's
Since it's a bit excessive for a user to take all the Guitar Hero songs with them (coming in around 2.2 GB's), I have to place a minimum suggested size for about 20 songs with the game to come in around 300 MB's for unmodded & 500 MB's for the Alarian mod. However, these are only estimates.
The other issue are system requirements. FoF 1.2.415 with a scale back in quality (use the included LightGraphics mod & even the NoobEdition mod), you would likely be able to play it with little difficulties with a 1.0 GHz processor. FoF 1.2.415-RF_4.15 can work with a 1.0 GHz processor as well by disabling some of eye candy (as well as the mentioned mods). Alarian mod, however, is dedicated towards the eye candy & therefore becomes practically unplayable on a 1.0 GHz processor, even when you try to scale back the quality. While the minimum processor requirements would have to be throughly researched, I wouldn't feel comfortable running the Alarian mod on a processor slower than 2.0 GHz.
OVERALL, here's what I would suggest.
1) Release the "Base" version now -- A lot of gamers would appreciate it.
2) Work on 1.2.415-RF_4.15 as the "Plus" version & the Alarian mod as the "Deluxe" version --
This suggestion is to give the users some choices, similar to Open Office, so they can pick the version that's right for them... provided we give the all the information about the versions.
The RF mod version, albeit a "dead" mod, would be fairly easy to make portable & therefore could released quickly or even provide the DIY instructions for those who are interested.
The Alarian mod would take more time to make portable due to all the extras it provides, which would require more debugging. Unless I use a computer at my local library (as most of the public computers run around the 2.0 Ghz level), I would be unable to give this a full test run.
Ultimately, if you feel like giving yourself a bit more work, I say go for it!

No songs, sounds and skins you refer to can and will be included due to not being Open Source, sorry.
While the songs are still a DIY deal, the other parts would really hurt (if not kill) the Alarian mod, but still leave the RF_Mod unaffected.

I'm using Alarian MOD but I don't think you should make this mod. Although I live it and it supports Drum tracks as well, the mod is being distributed with graphics and sounds that could be problematic from a legal point of view because these are taken from various other sources.
