Whenever I download something, Fx slows down quite a bit. I mean the program speed, not connection speed. Any ideas why this is?

You're downloading to the drive, which slows down every app running from the drive. Download to your desktop of the machine you're on and then copy it to your drive if you want to take it with you.
Remember, writes to flash ram are the slowest and will slow down everything going on from thr same drive while they occur.

Then in order to completely delete the file, without sending it to the recycle bin, press Shift+Delete to delete it. This should remove most traces of the file (except the shortcut created in My Recent Documents) in case you are worried about leaving traces of the file (like at school or something).
There isn't really a slowdown when I use portable wackget to DL to my drive.

Remember, when you're using FF, FF itself is waiting for itself to make writes to the drive.

If you're under Windows XP and you're NOT using an iPod shuffle, it might be wise to enable write-behind caching on the drive. This is what I did, and it really improved PFF's performance, even with History turned on. To do this, right-click your drive in My Computer, go to Properties and switch to the Hardware tab, then find your device and double-click it. Under the Policies tab of the resulting dialog box, choose the option "Optimize for performance" then click OK until all the dialogs are dismissed.
Note that if you're told to restart the computer, ignore the request and click No--all you actually have to do to get things going at this point is pull the drive (use safe removal, PLEASE) and re-insert it.
Edit: I can't make this clear enough. Please don't do this if you're using an iPod shuffle. For whatever reason, having write-behind caching turned on for an iPod will cause iTunes to slow down to a crawl while updating songs on it. Enough that iTunes actually becomes nearly unusable while the update is taking place.

I've thought about it, but I've had problems w/ safe removal even with write caching disabled (sometimes it says that it's being used, even when I've closed all my programs and windows for the drive, and I even wait at least 5 seconds after the light stops flashing before I attempt safe removal).

I think that's the operating system keeping something open on the drive that it shouldn't. Safe Removal obviously won't work if files are still open, even if they're just open for reading. If I can't get it to Safe Remove after 5 or so tries, I just pull the drive because chances are the only files left open are just open for reading.
Note: Usually killing explorer.exe and then restarting it helps. You know how with some files (like images), explorer shows a preview of the file in the sidebar? Well I think it forgets to close the file after loading the preview.
