FreeCol

What: FreeCol

Where: http://www.freecol.org/

License: Open Source

Why: A remake of the game Colonization, and it will eventually move on to creating a FreeCol 2, which will be an implementation of what the developers and users of FreeCol think Colonization 2 would have been. The game is about colonizing North America.

java

well FreeCol is written in Java. We've been kinda keeping away from Java apps for now because the Java Runtime Environment is not yet fully open sourced and we can't distribute it with our apps. According to a recent article though, Java should be 100% open source in a couple of months. When that happens you should start seeing plenty of Java apps here.

I am still surprised that

I am still surprised that people program open source programs in non-open languages. I might be forgetting something, but in my opinion it kind of defeats the purpose.
