EyeOS Portable

Would anyone like EyeOS portable? It's an open-source, web based operating system. I've been working on a portable version for a couple days, so if anyone else besides me would like it, please post here. Yes, you can get a free eyeos account at eyeos.info, but there server's sometimes slow, and, just for privacy's sake.

Edit: I have the installer posted in the beta testing forum. Get it here:

Cool!

I probably will get it done in about a week or so. Also, would you rather have a taskbar icon to start and stop the portable server, or two separate PAM entries?
This is my very first attempt to make a portable app, but I wanted this one so badly. Smile If you have any suggestions, for it, just post here.
Thanks, Bobert

I'd suggest a taskbar icon,

I'd suggest a taskbar icon, some of us already have too much entries in the PAM.

Could you post your installer in the beta section for testing purpose when you got something working ? Some users might be interested.

You betcha! Right now, mostly all I've got to do is the installer. I'm not too familiar with NSIS, but I should be able to post it in a couple days.

No need to be familiar

with NSIS for the installer to work, 'cuz in the installer that comes with all PApps, you just modify the BASIC INFORMATION settings. Almost nobody uses a homemade launcher nowadays ;).

launcher/installer

The installer is just the basic information bit, but the launcher must be custom, to cope with extras. I think that that's what Bobert is talking about.

Server?

Bobert: what server are you using to run eyeOS? eyeOS is written in PHP, so I presume you're using some Apache/PHP5 server combo. Which, or did you roll your own? I can help if you need some light-weight server software

Also, You say that the example server at eyeos.info is sometimes slow; eyeOS is likely to run even slower from a USB disk. Meaning, seriously slowly.
I speak from experience!

I also see the license is the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3. I've never seen it before, but it's OSI-approved, which means it's fine for publishing here.

All in all, though, it sounds a good idea. Did you have to modify anything/much to get it working? I've never looked at the source code.

I'm using...

MicroApache and MicroPHP. I tried XAMPP, but I could only scale it down to about 40MB. With Micro (Yes, it's GPL), and some tinkering, I can get the server and EyeOS for just about 8-10MB.

Also, it is a couple seconds, slower, but then I've got a fast internet connection, but a slow stick. For me, the privacy and admin control are worth it.

I didn't have to modify EyeOS itself, just plopped it in the htdocs folder, and pre-installed it. (Installation off a stick takes about 5-6 min) I did configure the server a bit, but not much else.

Guess what...

Guess what I was going to suggest! Biggrin

I'm working on MicroApache Portable, but it's got pretty much everything, and is fully configurable.

Yah, it's awesome. I've tried a bunch of others, but they were too big, had drive letter issues, etc. Smile
