I'm trying to get myself set up so I can work off other computers while I'm on the road. I've got TBP up and running off my USB but the account settings are hooped when it comes to the "Local Directory"
under "Server Settings": it writes in the drive letter which, of course, changes frequently as one moves between computers.
As it happens I have my TB mail in a non-standard place, namely $Drive/working/Thunderbird/Mail... but you can't specify that, the $Drive part, in the "Local Folder" field, nor simply /working/... .
Is there a solution to this? Or would it have to be redone with every new drive letter assignment? That wouldn't be very "portable".
I half suspect that the solution is to move my Mail folder back to the default place, whatever that is, yes?
Thanks for reading, any assistance much appreciated.
You need to keep your mail in the default place. All of Thunderbird Portable's data (mail, settings, etc) should stay within ThunderbirdPortable\Data in its default location. It's not meant to be moved around to other locations on the drive.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Fair enough, thanks. So the mail folder should be something like \ThunderbirdPortable\Data\Mail\....?
It's generally:
ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\mail
or, for IMAP:
ThunderbirdPortable\Data\profile\ImapMail
as the defaults. It may be best to re-setup a default install of Thunderbird Portable and not change any of the advanced options like mail locations to ensure it's working properly.
I actually thought alternate locations, though unsupported, may work (though it would, of course, break the platform's ability to backup your application data) but it would appear not to. The apps are designed to be entirely self-contained in a single directory so they can be moved around. All support moving between PCs while in the same location (relative path). Some even support moving paths.
Oh and welcome to PortableApps.com

Thanks again. FWIW, TBP seems to run fine once I tell it where my mail folders are, as in that non-standard mail location I mentioned above. It's just that it's a drag to have to have to go through and manually set these each time the drive letter changes. C'est la vie, I can live with that for now.
And thanks for the welcome.
