PortableApps.com bundeled with EmTec USB Drives!!!

Today I read in the new Media Markt advertisement paper that they sell a Emtec 8 gb usb drive "incl. OpenOffice-package and Internetbrowser etc."

I got suspicious and wondered what package they are referring to cause it didnt say U3 nor any other known alternative so I searched for the drive on their website and found this.

It says "Included software: Em-Desk Software suite". I went to their homepage and saw that they bundle PortableApps.com software with their drives!!!

They even have a platform but I think its their own creation. I just wonder why they dont use the PortableApps.com Platform...?

They make it look a little like its their own creation but all the downloads go viy our pages which I think is a clever way to ensure that the downloads stay up-to-date.

I just think this is cool and I wanted to let you guys know.

Hmmm

It may sound good, but it turns out that it's got issues. They're rearranging the app layouts so that an end user can't upgrade the apps easily. They're pre-bundling an AppNamePortable.ini to hide our branding/splash. They're not making the source available themselves as required under the GPL (we take this responsibility over for distributors we work with who follow the guidelines and don't mess things up or remove our branding). They're making changes to Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition in violation of the trademark guidelines (bookmark changes, hiding the splash screen, changing the homepage). They're distributing outdated versions of everything.

So, overall, there are some issues with what they're doing. I'm hoping this is merely an honest mistake on their part and have contacted them with options to resolve it. Hopefully, we can get them on-board with distributing things the right, legal way and turn this into a positive.

ah

For a second I thought this was one of the hardware vendors coming onboard...
Looks like some Apps (sumatra) arent from here but from framakey instead.

Maybe I should have taken a closer look at their download before posting this...sorry.

And I really hope they come on board but somehow I doubt it.

This link:

This link: http://www.em-desk.com/en/telechargement.php points directly to the portableapps com site concerning the Source Codes for many apps. Seems their 'platform' on that page is v1.0 version - january 2008.

Cheers.

Looks like it

It looks to me like it's just a mistake on their part. They have us credited in the source page and they display our feed.

French connection?

For me it looks like they took portableapps.free.fr as base for their em-desk and applications. This French site had made no secret of the fact that their developments were based on portableapps.com. Surprisingly the site portableapps.free.fr seems to have disappeared in the last days. In Google cache you can find some of the old pages but if you are going there directly you get a 302 and are redirected to a French forum ...

In Germany (where Media Markt resides) GPL violations can be sued by the courts. Harald Welte, the developer of netfilter/iptables, has been doing very good work in the last four years (see http://gpl-violations.org/) ...

Check out this...

Check out this: PortableApps.free.fr is dead! Google Translated version:

My french site is dead by fishing.

Friday afternoon I have done miserably by a mail asking me to click
http://sudscribe.free.fr/login/
and the small malignant who opened the account at sudscribe free a pass and recovered my portableapps redirected to a small forum minable.

This is especially a shame for the visitors who were of interest to me is work less.

I had taken the style of PortableApps.com for m'éviter to make one and pay tribute to John T. Haller, which produces the best portable applications.

Hmmm

Maybe we could see if he wants to work with us. We could use another French translator. And having another developer would be handy. Anyone have his contact info?

Better not

Your link leads via Google cache to scripts on the hijacked site. So a mail would not reach the desired receiver.
