ClamWin: Please help

Hi,

I installed ClamWin Portable on my Transcend Flashget pen drive from windows XP. Now when i use it on my other computer which has windows 98 installed (and no antivirus) the application from the pen drive does not run. And thus my pen drive gets infected with some unwanted .exe files. What should I do to make CalmWin run from my pen drive on windows 98?

Please help.

Thats weird

cause according to the applications page, Clamwin should run on Win98. If you run it on Win 98, what exactly happens? Does the splash appear?

Have you tried running it on

Have you tried running it on a known clean PC? Some viruses will turn off antivirus software, maybe there is an infection that is stopping clamwin from running.
Can you check the running tasks to see if ClamWin.exe and ClamWinPortable.exe are running, how long they run for before they cut off?

Virus

If the PC already has a virus, the virus may be preventing antivirus programs from running. So, while it lets our ClamWinPortable.exe launcher run, it won't let clamwin.exe run.

You'll need to boot that PC into safe mode and manually remove the virus bits or start from a Windows Live CD to disinfect it.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Infected system?

If you suspect your local drive to be virus infected boot it from a clean medium (i.e. CD) and check for viruses. You can use something like Avira AntiVir Rescue System (about 50 MB). After starting this (not on the infected system) it has to be burned on a CD-R. With this CD-R you can boot and scan the suspicious system.

Rescue system and Windows 98

Your Windows 98 is not active when you boot from the CD. The Avira Rescue System creates a bootable CD based on Linux. So it shouldn't matter what Windows version you use on the infected system. According to Heise Software Directory (German) it supports all versions from Windows 95 to Vista. Here's the Avira press release and the tools download page for further reading. Good luck!
