Is it possible to 
have Firefox 3 use a local html file for my home page and (B) use a relative address so that it always finds it on my flash drive?

Your drive letter changes on different computers so I don't think you can.
No need for relative, though. Just set your homepage to a file on your homepage in Firefox like usual (full path and all). The PortableApps.com Launcher takes care of it from there.

You could use the FirefoxPortable.ini file to set a LocalHomepage
Here is the description of the INI entry
The LocalHomepage entry allows you to set Firefox Portable to use a local file on your portable drive as your homepage. The file must be a path relative to the launcher. If you were to set it to a file in the same directory as FirefoxPortable.exe, you would use LocalHomepage=homepage.html If it was in a subdirectory called homepage, you would enter LocalHomepage=homepage/homepage.html.
That's really meant more for a Live CD now. It's a holdover from before the launcher handled it automatically.

Is there actually a solution for opening a document with a relative path?
I want to have some bookmarks in my firefox portable for documents (.html, .txt) that are on the USB stick where portable apps & firefox portable are installed on.
Last I checked Firefox doesn't support relative bookmarks. And checking and rewriting the whole set of bookmarks on each launch would be a bit prohibitive speed-wise.
You can set them as your homepage easily, though.
So, why not create an HTML file as your homepage with links to all the other relative files? That would work.

Hey, you wrote the launcher right? Can you explain with firefox portable 2 could load a page from the command line, but firefox portable 3 can't - but gives you a curious dialog box instead?
What does the dialog box say?
It says
"Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system."
And portable firefox 3 isn't frozen, you can drop an html page on it for instance, or load something.
Try closing any firefox windows already open and see what happens

As i wrote the point is to be able to launch a page from the command line when its running.
When Firefox Portable 2 running, and you did this from the command line:
FirefoxPortable.exe http://www.cnn.com
It would simply load cnn.com in a new tab.
When Firefox Portable 3 running, and you do this from the command line:
FirefoxPortable.exe http://www.cnn.com
You get that error message, which is clearly a big step backwards.

Does it work on a normal install?
If you can set the machine to always open htm and html files with portable firefox, this sort of works - at least gets you part way there.
In my case, my page needs to load a java applet and related files but craps out - no error message, nothing.
So my question is, why does this work great when Firefox 3.0 is installed on a computer, but not when using portable Firefox?
on both PCs?

I am trying to make some presentations totally portable. Everything works fine on my office and laptop systems, using installed FireFox 3. When I try to use portable FireFox on some generic system for the presentations and bring up an html file that tries to load a java applet, I just get a blank screen.
The reason I want to use portable Firefox (other than the obvious reasons) is that IE on generic systems is usually not set up to easily (if at all) run java applets. The machines have java installed on them, if I can work through the IE configurations, my applet launches just fine. I would just rather not have to go through all these machinations every time I want to use this material. (Note, typically the machines I have to deal with have a configuration frozen with Deep Freeze, so I have to go through the agonies with IE every time I use one of the machines.
That may have happened because when setting an association with firefox portable, the standard firefox in the package controls everything. our portable launcher only ensures that settings are not left behind.
Setting a file association to a portable app is not recommended. With all apps on this site, the base application is in control, so setting an association would bypass the portable launcher, and then would cause the system's default profile (if one existed) or a blank profile to load instead.
