connection timing out

Setting up Thunderbird Portable for the first time, i've got 2 Gmail accounts, i've got them set up as they should be (use standard TB at home) but the connection keeps timing out. never makes it to ask for a password or anything, so i don't know what's wrong...

Firewall?

Do you use ZoneAlarm firewall?

The recent Windows update has caused ZoneAlarm to block outgoing traffic if you are set to "stealth" or "high". Temporary solution is to set ZoneAlarm to "medium".

Microsoft is supposed to be coming out with an update to their broken update soon (or so they say).

If you can access the internet, this isn't the problem. I'd start looking for configuration issues with Thunderbird...

we use Sygate at work, where

we use Sygate at work, where i'm setting this up... i used the exact same setup as i use at my home, on my flash drive. internet works fine, just can't use TB portable...

Correction....Gmail doesn't work, i've already imported my RSS feeds in, they all load without a problem... it seems to be an issue with the pop.gmail setup, keeps timing out. I tried following the instructions on gmail for setup with imap, same problem

I don't do Gmail...

Never done gmail, so maybe someone else can help with specifics.

When I set my Thunderbird up for web-based email, I went to:
http://webmail.mozdev.org/index.html
and followed the directions for installation of the webmail add-on and maildotcom add-on and then the configuration they suggested.

Worked perfectly for me.

I see that they have a different package tailored for Gmail, so you sould follow those directions. If you have done that already, I'm clean out of ideas (sorry).
