Portable Menu Theme Designer - Beta 4- Testers Needed

PortableMenuThemeDesigner

NOTE:
Development my be a bit slow starting in August as I am getting married on the 3rd and leaving for 10 days on the 17th for my honeymoon.

History:
0.100.0.4
Added OnClick and PathToApp to custom buttons section.
Added "update" button to custom buttons section.
0.100.0.3
Finished up the height, width, and margin position controls.
0.100.0.2
Fixed custom buttons/images not clearing when opening a different theme.
Added Caption and Font options to custom buttons.
Added tracking and position control to custom buttons/images.
Misc code cleanup.(actually quite a bit left to do)
0.100.0.1 (initial beta release)
Added R3x custom buttons and images to theme.ini write.
Fixed R3x custom buttons and image loading so they are dragable and sizable.

TODO: (before beta 1 release)
Finish preview click to main form tracking.
Add R3x specific ini entries to the theme.ini routine.
Add Font Select to all applicable theme buttons.
Write "Save As" routine.
Write "Open" routine.
Tidy up the main window(labels, layout, etc.)

Alpha History:
0.99.0.12
Finished tidying up the layout.
Added ability to add R3x custom images.
--it doesn't add them to the theme.ini, they aren't movable yet, and it doesn't clear when opening a new theme(need to tie it into the other functions).
0.99.0.11
Added Scroll Buttons Positioning and theme.ini section.
Started R3x custom button support, the designer will load the custom buttons when opening a theme.
-- Still have to figure out how to handle the creation/positioning when creating in the gui.
More layout updates, just tidying things up a bit.
Added checkbox to hide the PAM logo, this writes to the theme.ini and also shows/hides the Theme designer text image, it is set to not show by default.
"Fixed" drag box not showing when dragging an image/button (I broke it with a previous update, NOTE: this causes the transparency to be off while the button is being dragged)
0.99.0.10
Fixed "Open" not populating image paths.
Fixed default value for the margin when loading theme.ini
Fixed "Open/Save To" being locked to current drive.
Added Margin position to Documents and Pictures tab(still working out layout)
0.99.0.9
Added "Margin" to theme.ini read and write routine.
Changed basic theme image selection layout for user review.
Changed basic theme image browse dialog for user review.
0.99.0.8
Added "Open" to File menu.
Added "Save To" to File menu.
0.99.0.7
Finished up the button tracking.
Added the Font Select option to applicable buttons.
Added a "default" icon for the button.
Started "tidying up" the Main form, (adding labels, button sizes, etc.)
0.99.0.6
Changed "Save As" to "Save" (Have to write a real "Save As" routine)
Removed "Open" option until I write the code to handle opening an existing theme for editing.
Added button tracking for most of the buttons.
Added Exit and Eject Button values for R3x MOD's
Added default values for PAM icons.
{The Exit and Eject button use the imgExit and imgEject position values for now}
{The PAM icons are set to a default value of 0 for now}
{I put the entries at the very bottom of the ini file so they are easy to find and edit.}
0.99.0.5

paintbrush idea and feedback

paintbrush Idea
JPG- http://www.flickr.com/photos/24348193@N06/2665187704/
The ICO wasn't 128 by 128 with just that so i added a GIMP window to it to make it just about 128 by 128

icon- http://alpha1beta.googlecode.com/files/design01.ico

original paintbrush image- http://berealct.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/paintbrush.png

EDIT: initial feedback:
the save as thing needs improvement, the save as should do a save in a folder structure like this
Default Data-I-folder icons
I-icon theme
I-Theme

and maybe it copy the icons used to that folder along with the background files and other source material, so it can easily be zipped/or moved into the menu place and used as a theme.

Question: how do you edit the text at the top, is that just the menu name?

Also official .paf format would be nice Biggrin

This is a great idea and will make custom theming easy, and while it needs a little work yet, it has great potential and should someday be built into the menu itself.

On the ToDo List

The Save As is on the posted ToDo List.
Actually I think its going to end up being more of a "Save To" as it will save the theme in a subdirectory in the selected path.
i.e. {selected path}\{Theme Name} with a folder structure of
{Theme Name}
\Icon Theme
\Theme
since this is the folder structure used by both the R3x MOD and my menu. When its finished it will copy the images to the appropriate folders (its the next thing I will be working on now that I've got the tracking done Alpha 8 or 9 will have it)
As for the text at the top, its an image and currently can't be changed as I don't believe the R3x MOD supports changing the PAM Logo images, only hiding them, and my menu doesn't use the images at all but does have a text filed at the top but its not part of the theme.

Pascal/Delphi

Its written in Delphi.
The icon is very similar to the current icon (the menu with a paint pallet across the middle) I'm looking for something new, or an improvement on what I have. I prefer the paint pallet to a paint brush.

NOTE: Alpha 8 is posted with the "Open" and "Save To" options.

hi smith, you know i love

hi smith,

you know i love your idea it make the theme.ini edit easier. but here a few suggestions from me Wink

1. R31 support [PAM size support for tiny or big PAMs (but i knoe you planing this)]
2. for new theme creations a PAM version selection (Smithtech, R31, R30, PAM 1.1 basic theme and advance theme (this will coming up in later versions), for handling the different theme.ini types and structures)
3. a cool new icon Wink

kind regards

RE: geek.menu

I've thought about geek.menu. I don't know how much extra work would be involved to support geek.menu's sizable themes. I believe the rest of the theme images and theme.ini are compatible.
Possibly once the Theme Designer is finished with R3x and SmithTech compatibility I will look into adding geek.menu sizable themes.
If there is something other that the sizable themes I am missing let me know.

about geek menu

there are stilll some errors in geek.menu's theme concept. eg there's a file called left.jpg - very large (261x549) but geek.menu only uses the first pixel line...
The whole stretching and non-stretching areas doesn't allow you to create buttons or similar. It's a mess. The exit button is switching to the left if u using eject so you you must use a uni background. I'm not sure an app could handle this ;-).

RE:

Thanks for the input NeoRame
1. R3x support is in the works(partially supported already)
Not sure what you mean by BIG or tiny PAM's ? The designer supports changing the number of buttons as well as using a different size background image now.
2. I don't think a version selection is necessary at this point as the SmithTech and R3x theme.ini file are compatible with each other as long as the appropriate entries are included (this also makes the themes more "universal"), and regular PAM would just not use the theme.ini and only use the images. If I'm missing something on this, please clue me in Wink
On the PAM advanced theme(later versions) I will be adding support after the new PAM is released and I have something to work with.
3. I'm really not good at graphic design, If someone wants to contribute it would be much appreciated Smile

hello and nice to see the designer growing..

I´ve tested alpha 9 : some comments
- I´d prefer the documents tab, looks less crowded than the pictures tab, using the theme preview for positioning buttons is clever but doesn´t work precisely yet
- opening an existing theme works, but the buttons´caption is positioned under the icons (like iconcuments)
- theme pictures like backup,top, drive slider aren´t saved to the new direction, just the theme.ini
- you can´t search / save a theme but to the system´s root drive
- for future development: adding custum buttons/images (e.g. for R31)is a must for themeing
.. nice work Smile

RE

thanks for the input.
1. Hmm, and I thought folks would prefer the pictures tab cause the vertical positioning scroll is up/down instead of left/right. The idea of dragging the button is to get it close then fine tune with the positioning scrolls. I know from working with photoshop its darn near impossible to move your mouse only one pixel at a time LOL.
2. I noticed that after I posted A9 its because of the default value of the "Margin" I added to the theme.ini load for R3x themes, I'll fix it in A10. (have to add a position bar for it as well)
3. Noticed this after uploading A9 as well, the open theme doesn't populate the paths for the theme being opened. Also to be fixed in A10.
4. I will have to look into the open/save them from additional drives, I didn't catch that.
5. Custom buttons support is planned, I actually need to add it to my menu to support R3x themes as well.

EDIT: A10 posted see notes above.

alpha 10

@1 both work for me, choose the one you like most
@2,3,4 work
@5 - desperately? waiting for it Wink

new:
-scroll_btn can be moved in the image but there is no tab for it on the gui, so settings aren´t saved in the theme.ini
-and yeah, R31 recognizes the new theme.
-Buttons don´t seem to be at the same position as in the "template" within the designer but that´s only an impression, I´ll do further testing later on

you don´t need glasses ;)

but for the position of the close and exit buttons - they´re a bit away from the standard in R31 and PAM 1.1;)
did a little testing on alpha 11:
themes are loading smoothly, my customized icons and the custom icons/buttons are found, but on the documents tab there´s missing the"..." field behind the icon path and on the pictures tab it says select icon though it is loaded correctly into the theme preview.
For the custom buttons/images I suggest extra tabs and on the R31 tab:
below the show PAM logo checkbox two selections:
number of buttons and number of images (perhaps 0-5?)
each tab should include:
size&position
fonts name/colour etc options (for the buttons)
caption
path to app (default= {theme}\...)
on click (that´s the problem, perhaps a drop down with some (or all?)prefigured options and the ability to create/type in others)
path (default=IconTheme\xxx.ico)(for the icons)

EDIT: to keep the gui tidied "custum buttons/images" could be checked on R3x tab as advanced features and opens a second gui with the extra tabs/ selections?

A12 is posted, take a look. It should give a better idea of where I'm going with everything.
Still working out the layout for the R3x options, suggestions are welcome.
The R3x options are still a work in progress and not fully functional though.

Cool

Looks cool, and with me starting to want to do themes for PAM and PAM Mods, it will be a lot easier.

I'd like to point some things:

  1. The Exit and Eject buttons have no good working layout, I still haven't understood their layout. Could you improve it? Make them have the same setup of the Docs and Pictures buttons?
  2. I think the Documents button layout you've been making is good enough, and I'd like to see it on all buttons.
  3. I get happy that you add custom button support, as everybody will use it probably Biggrin (mainly for the exit/eject buttons, I use them)
  4. There is no point 4

I am liking this, and I hope this gets more stable and keeps on going.

I would also like to request a rather complicated (probably crazy and one of those "not gonna happen") stuff: png support.
Now, calm down, here is my idea better explained: Using a 24bit transparency png, it is easy to create the background.jpg and background-top.bmp used by the themes. Using the pink/magenta/255-0-255/whatever colors for replacing transparent places, it can be useful for making theme creation simpler and keeping less files scattered all around the desktop (I have been having that problem Blum ).

What do you think?

Blue is everything.

Working On It

The layout on most of the tabs still needs to be updated, I was trying to figure out a layout so I wasn't updating the tabs until I figured out how I was gonna do the layout. Now that I've figured out a layout I'm happy with, the rest of the tabs will get updated in the next revision or two.
Right now there is no point to .png support for the designer as none of the menu's support it. I believe its planned for the new version of PAM so if PAM gets support for .png I will add it to the designer.

Great
  1. Great, with the tabs updated I will be able to do much more stuff with the menu mods
  2. What I meant with the png support is to use a single .png to make both the background.jpg and background-top.bmp. If the png is 24bit (binary transparency), then the transparent parts can be replaced with the "magic pink" rgb(255,000,255), that way pngs can be used to make bmp buttons and to images from one single image automatically. But it would be a lot of mess, so its better to wait for png support

Blue is everything.

Great!

Cool, now it is usable to make some themes!

Also, I am curious: I noticed an user pic on the top, but the current Mods don't support an user pic (that I know of). So... is it some kind of surprise? Biggrin

I also noticed on the "still on development" r3x support, and there it comes one thing: the button to toggle the header is partially cut of the window, as the window is too small to show it entirely (Wine 1.something with MS fonts installed and using Luna theme).

Also, some things that still have no edition tab: drive slider and those separators on the sidebar (even though they do not have any control at all Blum ).

Also, the "Save To" dialog does not work, as I select an place to save and it does nothing. Still haven't tested the save dialog. The open dialog works fine, and even shows my custom buttons (but not select them or edit them).

@ user pic

You can use a custom image to show a user pic with R31 (if there are any questions how, I could post the code for the standard position) - the designer is designed to support official PAM as mods.

I am still not good with custom buttons. In theory is to make an image that the user can replace, but if there is any more refined code I'd like to know Biggrin

no refined code

do an icon 48 x 48 of your favourite personal pic (named e.g.= PP.ico), put it into a folder called IconTheme next to the theme.ini within the desired theme ( directory in R31 =
..PortableAppsMenu(Mod)/data/theme/yourthemename/Icontheme ),
open theme.ini with notepad and add the following

[CustomImages]
0=IMG_PP
...

[IMG_PP]
Height=50
Width=48
Left=349
Top=8
Path=IconTheme\PP.ico

After Restart you should find Your desired icon on the right upper position, else do a little adjusting by changing position and measures to your needs.
Replacing the icons only works by changing the PP.ico or the path to the icon.
If you want an action -> add: OnClick=CustomImageExitClick (for eg eject)
PathToApp={THEME}\EjectScript.exe

example for an eject function with the PTC screwed theme for PAM 1.1 http://ptc.kain-planet.de/details.php?file=124
as mod for R31: include ejectscript within the themefolder next to theme.ini, do a transparent icon H17,W25 (with icofx or else)called eject.ico, put it into the IconTheme folder and add the following to the theme,ini

[CustomImages]
...
1=IMG_EJECT

[IMG_EJECT]
Height=17
Width=25
Left=282
Top=547
Path=IconTheme\eject.ico
OnCLick=CustomImageExitClick
PathToApp={THEME}\EjectScript.exe

restart..

Yup, thats what I was talking. Thanks for the code. That way I can add an userpic to my theme(s).

(I'll upload it/them when it/them is/are ready)

I already saw that ejectscript thing on the PTC theme that comes with Mod31, but I still haven't added it. I'll add it next time.

Name Field

Did you fill in the name field? The designer uses the name field to create the folder for the theme. If the name field is blank it does nothing.

R3x doesn't directly support a personalpicture, but PAM and my menu do.

I'll be adding the drive space slider and divider images soon.

On working under Wine, I'll have to look into it. I don't have a linux box to test on.

overall, great work

Excellent for working on PAM themes

though I'll stick to the gimp for r3x themes
if you can understand it at the basic "code, co-ordinates, and bmp" level then it's a lot easier to de-bug themes.

keep up the good work

gui for R3x buttons/images is ok; may I suggest the "margins, caption,path to app, path to the image, Onclick,FontsName etc lines " to complete the button/image part, perhaps as "advanced" checkbox or button (i know fuull functionality isn´t already established) -> good work Smile

oops + working on it

I thought I had the place holders for the margin and fonts (oops)
path and on click I still need to add, have to figure out how to store the information in the designer till it is saved to the theme.ini.
I think xrxca overloaded the object definitions, I will have to look at his code.

No PortableApp banner

there is no portable app banner, the images are trademarked so there not included in the app. I'm going to eventually make the title banner a user replacable .gif so you can make your own to see how the theme will look with it.
Eventually I may add it if I can get permission from John, just haven't gotten around to sending him an email.

its not in the app but

its not in the app but trademarked so what the deal with transparent header is there any way to go around this because the only thing ive found is the branding text in the restore, i deleted it hoping to add a custom banner and i restored it still there but what im asking is there no way around it and from what u said i dont think there is oh i i think the programs really cool so if you need and random people to help just holler and nm i realized i put u in between a rock and a hard place answerin that question i see you need permission to do so and this is there site forum so ya

No custom banner

As far as I know the none of the menu's support a custom banner.
The R3x MOD allows you to hide the banner so you could make the banner part of the background theme image.
My menu doesn't use the banner at all, instead it had a text field as a "title"
I believe PAM shows the banner on all themes.
Not a rock or a hard place, this is a very friendly forum. I've just been to lazy to ask permission to use the images and add the supporting code.

I love this one growing..

I know, not all functions are established, but ..
some annotations:
- dividers and drive space configuration is missing
- buttons text colour configuration doesn´t work
- buttons can be created but they disappear afterwards in the layout and aren´t saved
- the "OnClick" and "PathToApp" configuration would be appreciated very much

More info

Can you be more specific?
The text color and button creation / save appear to be working correctly.
Are you trying to apply a color to a button that doesn't exist yet?
Drive Space, dividers, OnClick, and PathToApp are coming be patient.

ok, I just took the documents tab..

clicked on the button, the colours window appeared ; then I chose a new colour on the little screen and clicked on "add new colour" -> didn´t work. I´ll test beta and sure I am patient,...;)

select the color

you have to select the custom color after you add it to the boxes on the bottom left.

found it

on the scale on the right side colour intensity was set to black so whatever colour I chose it resulted in black, I thought it was not working, sorry..
@beta 4: you can´t uncheck "visible" for the default buttons/images"
OnClick and PathToApp for the custom images is missing
Loading an old theme and saving with new name works for the R3x section
Caption for the update button isn´t bold though original .inisays bold=1
Adding the OnClick commands could be up to the themers but a sort of history
for the OnClick form could make things easier.Perhaps an editable file read
by the designer app ? Very good work Smile

Will work on it

wow, quite a list.
I haven't done the code for the visible check boxes, thought I had them greyed out to indicate they weren't done yet. oops. They should be done in the next release.
I didn't have time to do the code for the custom images OnClick and PathToApp, they should be in the next release.
Caption on the update button? Is this a custom button in your theme?
I only half follow what you mean about the OnClick, but if you use your first theme as a starting point for the second, third, etc. The OnClick will be carried over.
Maybe you can expand on what you mean?

@ update button - yes, it´s a

@ update button - yes, it´s a custom button on my thenme
@ tried different OnClick commands with different buttons, the default? "...exit..." is the only one that shows up every new start. I´d just thought over keeping the different OnClick commands stored once they have been used Wink

RE

I'll look into the font on the custom buttons.
Now I understand what you mean for the OnClick, it could be done but I don't think its worth the coding time as there can't be more than two or three commands. Each command has to have a response hard codded in the app. I forgot the eject in the drop down, I will have to look at the source for R3x to see if there are any others.
If you know of any others post them here so I can add them to the designer. If the R3x MOD is ever updated or if PAM adopts similar functionality I may add the "remember" option.
Thanks for all the suggestions and the testing. Your definitely keeping me on my toes.
I've kind of been rushing this and missed a few things and had to pick them up in a follow up release. I was hoping to get further along than I am by this point.(see comments above)

you can find them in main.dfm

you can find them in main.dfm of R31 source; but there are a lot of commands possible -> perhaps this should be developped later on

You mean all the OnClick commands?

I thought you meant just the custom OnClick events.
If you mean all of the OnClick events, I will have to think about how to handle that.
But yes it will have to wait for a while.

What do i do

I would like to find out if i can get a theme based on the bible created.

i don't know much about how to program or create themes. i would be prepared to learn how to, if i get some help, as i would like to create a theme.

An Old Irish Blessing
May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
