I would wait.

Noone knows yet if/how the auto update works with FF3. So the safest thing s to wait for a message from John.

Well...

Since I have a full backup of my FFP 3.0, I give it a shot and let the auto update do his job.
I don't know if the auto update bug is fixed, so I did this on a machine with a FF3 local instalation.
Restarted and it runs like a dream.
Closed and let the auto update runs on the local install.
Everithing works fine.

But...

But is an extra entry of Firefox on Add/Remove Programs?

That is what we want to know. Because there is always a possibility that Firefox breaks the laucher in every update, but thats not what we want to know, we want to know if the Auto-Update makes unnecessary entries in the registry that should not be there.

So, how is the Add/Remove Programs?

Blue is everything.

"There can be only one!"

When I updated FFP 3.0 to 3.0.1, an extra entry appeared on Add/Remove Programs, but after I updated the local install, it was gone.

I have not tried the update

I have not tried the update as although first updating portable and then local is no solution as I dont have a local install so maybe update only portable would still cause problems. (or if you update local first and then portable)

FF 3.01

I just updated my browser and found that Faster Fox didn't work with 3.01. Be careful with compatible issues with extensions when you do updates.

I'm pretty sure John doesn't

I'm pretty sure John doesn't want you using the update function, as it creates issues for the platform and leaving behind files.

We don't know about the 3.x

We don't know about the 3.x series yet, nobody has tested it yet. We do know that the 2.x series had issues though.

Here how I update my

Here how I update my portable.

Install 3.01 FULL on different drive of your choice.

Then after the install go to the folder you install your Firefox 3.01 and select all inside the folder and COPY.
Then go over your portable Firefox --> App --> Firefox
Inside that folder Firefox delete everything. Then paste everything you had copy from the installation into that folder Firefox.

Afterward run FirefoxPortable.exe it will start and run any add on updates you may have and it should work whatever add on you have. If not you may have to wait for new updates on the add on.

but beside that....mainly it. I have always done it that way and it seem to me that how they do their portable Firefox. Unless some files missing...I would not know but whatever it is working for me.

Give it a test....don't overwrite your original portable....make a copy and test it. Then when you feel comfortable ...copy over your usb key. I got 2 portable on my key...in case one or the other don't work well. And a copy of my profile in case something goes wrong.

But do not UPGRADE from the web....it wont work. Screw things up....web update are made for FULL installation on the hardrive not for USB Portable appz.

Here's how I upgraded my

1.Download Firefox 3.0.1 Full from mozilla
2.Extract (!) the contents to a directory using Winzip or Winrar (say X)
3.Copy your Firefox 3.0 Portable to a new directory (say Y)
4.Copy contents of X\nonlocalized, X\localized, X\optional to Y\App\firefox
5.Run Y\FirefoxPortable.exe and enjoy Firefox 3.0.1 PE

Cheers,
D

I was just about to ask this

I was just about to ask this question. Typically I update from Auto Update and haven't encountered any issues that I know of, but just to be certain. I can wait for updates though.
