VLC or Coolplayer portable?

I've installed both but was wondering which one people use more? (I know this is the VLC forum)

VLC is the ultimate media

VLC is the ultimate media player. There's very little you can throw at it that it won't play. I've been using it for years and everyone else should too. I've never used Coolplayer though, so I'm definitely biased.

Hm

I think its supremely userhostile if you don't have a few months to read all the documentation. Its also very crash prone. I have one stream i need to play which usually works (others stutters or it crashes).

I'll check out that coolplayer you suggest

I haven't used Coolplayer,

I haven't used Coolplayer, except to check it out for Vista bugs.

Personally, VLC sits as my default media player and Screamer as my internet stream player.

I could probably use just one, but why?

Yeah

I agree with onestoploser. VLC really play anything you want, and I haven't found anything it won't. VLC's basic interface is very simple, but it does support skins, however I remember John saying the skinning system is kinda buggy. CoolPlayer+ on the other hand definitely doesn't play as much of the bat and still doesn't come close with some more codec plugins. However, CoolPlayer+ has an extremely nice interface with the skin NeoRame has done up, and the playlist handling/making it better IMO.

So, the just of it. VLC will play anything you want and should't give you a problem. CoolPlayer+ if it's audio only and you want something sleek and sexy.

Use Both

They serve different purposes. I use VLC to play videos. But for playing audio on the go, CoolPlayer+ Portable is the better option. Especially since you can set it in shade mode and stay on top and keep your audio player in the titlebar of your screen at all times just like you can with Winamp.

Use Both

I agree with John... I use CoolPlayer+ Portable and Winamp Portable for Audio, because I play MP3Pro files (It saves a LOT of space on my portable hard drive) and the Winamp plugin works with both...

VLC plays anything I throw at it (including FLV files)

aka Major PITA... ask me what it means, as you will be amused...

I use both too, but for the ...

clicking at a later point on the track for VLC, it shuts down instead of jumping to that point.

I've been using SMPlayre more and more though for videos. I may go to the SMPlayer/Songbird combo, when Songbird portable comes.

Unrelated

I know that bothers you, but it's not related to the current discussion. As discussed in other threads, the seek issue is related non-standard (FLV) or partially support (Real) files. Some is fixed in the beta, some isn't. But it's not related to the current discussion and doesn't belong here.

I said I use vlc and coolplayer

which was asked in the original post question. And why it wasn't the bees-knees, which I thought would be a part of the answer.

dont think so, it might be freeware for some versions.

But if you search lot in the web you will find portable version on some strange sites...

(we are not supposed to post links to such sites here)

Said he was using
Winamp portable for audio, So I was thinking,
Even though, they refer to it being a Portable Player,
that since this was for "PortableApps" as WE know them
here on this site, that maybe he actually has
a "Portable" "Winamp".

I use VLC to play Audio as

I use VLC to play Audio as well as Video. Although I have coolplayer+ installed I never use it. I don't know the difference in size and speed between those applications but I do know that I rather use VLC as media player. To some extent having both CoolPlayer+ and VLC is like having multiple applications to perform similar tasks.

VLC tends to remove features in newer versions

VLC tends to remove features in newer versions. For example, starting from a few versions back it no longer supports YouTube FLV files (for certain systems only). But I no longer care for that, because my favorite site keepvid.com started saving YouTube's files as MP4 files instead of FLV files anyway.

But then they released v0.8.6i, and turns out it gets crashed when trying to take screenshots (quite a basic need from a player). The official word is to replace the relevant file with that of v0.8.6h's.

I'm just trying to say that you can't trust on new versions to have as many features as older ones. Then again, it's illogical not to upgrade because who wants to stay with old versions.

VLC is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more compatible (with everything), plus it's insanely fast. The normal version has some troubles with certain clips in my experience, though.

Depends on Demands

I've used both Coolplayer & VLC on my Thumbdrive it ultimately boils down to preferences.

VLC is pretty much the ultimate multimedia player that I've used. You can throw practically any audio or video format at it & 99% of the time, VLC will play it. The only known format that's not supported are the RealMedia files... but rarely anybody (with a decent brain) cares to use those formats.

The downside with VLC is the file size.

Coolplayer is microscopic in comparison with other portable players, but it's functions are limited to audio only.

I prefer VLC over Coolplayer mostly for the media support that I need.

I agree, but can VLC play

I agree, but can VLC play .m4p (iTunes Protected format)? The way I look at it is that VlC does everything Coolplayer can plus more. Having Coolplayer too seems like a waste of space, because VLC + Coolplayer is more then VLC.

Not sure

Does not look like it according to thier page.
But it's not that common, and stop using the
itunes store and protected Lol.
That File has alot of restrictions to it.

And I know Itunes if you don't buy for like 30 days, the files on your IPOD become unusable or dissappear.
Inluding Mp3 and all that.

VLC Player

VLC is the swis army knife of media players in my opinion. I previously used Coolplyer for my aaudio as tis got a nice interface, is lightweight and other various nifty things. But then I find it was removing my MP3 tags so stopped using it at all. For large audio collections I recommend Songbird.

both

i use coolplayer for audio and vlc for video
no real reason, i just like the coolplayer at the top of the screen thing (like winamp)
if media player classic was portable id use that, i dont like having to minimize fullscreen vid to skip through, mpc you just moved the mouse to the bottom of the screen and it would pop up Biggrin

Hi and welcome here Smile

This thread is about Vlc and Coolplayer and which one is used more often by other forum members.

Linux isn't always the solution - especially in this particular case as some people don't can not choose which OS they use PortableApps on.

And btw: using punctuation will make your posts more readable.
