No the auto-updater breaks portability. It's an issue with the thunderbird/firefox/sunbird application itself, not our portable version. we are working with mozilla on a fix.
I was able to update my T-Bird Portable to 2.0.0.16 by copying the contents of the "\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird" folder from my non-portable version to the "App\Thunderbird" Folder in my portable version (I copied the portable folder to a fixed drive to test it--didn't want to break my email)...
Ran the NEW portable version, and it seems to work well... I believe this would be the equivalent to an updated Portable version...
aka Major PITA... ask me what it means, as you will be amused...
you´re only updating TB and it works (has been recommended here for localizing the app in earlier days), but sometimes the launcher is updated, too, and you won´t have the new gimmicks -> think of the new FFP launcher with the ability to change all absolute paths within the addons. If there are performance/security concerns of real importance you should update the way you described ( but in that case the portable update is released almost ever before the autoupdater asks you to update);)

Handling things with a copy/paste like that will work correctly.
Allowing the auto-updater to run will essentially do a full-install of firefox, and will hijack all of the settings and registry keys for a local install, and point them to the portable install. because of those changes, portability is broken.
The update downloaded automatically for me. Now Thunderbird crashes, I may have lost my address book. It might be good to have automatic updates set to off by default, especially if it's going to break things.
Update: Installing the new PortableApps version doesn't fix the problem. It actually makes it worse. There's a grey bar with red lettering:
<menu id="offlineMenuItem" insertafter="trashMenuSeparator" label= .... (goes off the screen)
Then it crashes when I try opening the email. I'm going to look at prefs.js, that's what I had to edit to move Thunderbird profiles to PortableApps. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I let this happen before I found this and now, crash!!
I was getting nagged too and made the mistake of trying to let the update do its thing.
Now when I open Thunderbird from Portable Apps screen I still get the old version and it is trying to update in the background (can be seen on the menu under Help). Also, at first I thought the update worked the but the Portable Apps selection still loads .14 version so if it did work it didn't go where I thought it did.
I can no longer pull messages from my ComCast account but the folders I had and the address book still seem intact.
What I get instead is:
I'm set up to check three separate ComCast mailboxes. When the first opens the info bar shows "Downloading message 1 of 42" and then I get the following message.
? There was an error downloading the following message:
From: Human Resources
Subject: Career Opportunities with Hyatt
This message may contain a virus or there is not enough disk space. Skip this message?
YES NO
Selecting NO causes --
! Unable to write the email to the mailbox. Make sure the system allows you write privileges, and you have enough disk space to copy the mailbox.
OK
Clicking OK causes -- the current mailbox to close, the 2nd to be contacted and opened, which causes the previously described process to be repeated, except the Downloading message is 1 of 18. The series of steps and messages is the same. The 3rd mailbox is empty so there's no errors and then the process stops till the next time the mailboxes are checked, and so on.
At this point I was hoping someone could tell me what or what values(s) to change in the Advanced Config screen to turn off the attempt to download and install the updates. (I've looked and see 3 or 4 things that might do that but don't know what labels do what.) Also, any suggestions to get it back working normally again would also be greatly appreciated!

I'll wait, then. I'd rather do that than break my lifeline. Thank you.
I see 2.0.0.16 showed up today.
Now that's quite an emphatic answer to a question.

And we cant distribute Thunderbird with the updates turned off due to the contract with mozilla.

What happens if you just reinstall a fresh PortableApps.com copy of Thunderbird?
That should do the trick.

Did reinstalling the previous version of portable apps Thunderbird resolve your issue? We're you able to recapture your settings, inbox, etc? Thanks.
