I'd like to suggest that Toucan go one step further, and do checksum verification of files, rather than just checking timestamps
This would be done for a number of reasons, including (in order of importance):
1) to be sure that copied files are actually valid,
2) it might clear up some of the issues cited here (https://portableapps.com/node/13441). Perhaps Toucan could run a backup and then offer a dialog with timestamp and checksum info for the files in question, and offer a couple of choices about which action the user wants.
I think including checksum verification would be a HUGE step towards making Toucan an even more powerful tool. Thanks for the consideration!

sounds like an excellent idea, Toucan 2 is currently pretty much code-frozen (apart from command line support) and I don't want to add another feature to it yet, but it will definitely be on the list for 2.1, it is a really neat was of solving a lot of issues.

I'm very much looking forward to that! I love the program, but currently without any checksum support, I can't really rely on it for something as critical as backups/mirroring.

I wanted to finally take a moment and make sure to give credit for the idea behind my original post: I originally got the idea from using one of my other favorite programs: Teracopy. It is a copying program that, among other things, can verify the checksums of copied files, rather than blindly trusting the copy to be reliable.
Although it is (unfortunately) not open source, it's still good stuff. There's even a portable version offered in paf format (also mentioned here).
Anyhow, I'm very much looking forward to version 2.0 and eventually 2.1 (or whatever it ends up as), hopefully with my idea worked in very soon! I can't wait!
