I have been looking for a truly portable pdf reader for a while, thought I had found it with Foxit, but it writes to the registry, it occured to me that maybe a plug in for Open Office might be the answer.

If you look at this page, you'll find:
OpenOffice.org 1.1 introduced the PDF export feature. Version 2.0 now extends the basic export feature. With the new version it is possible to define the compression levels of embedded images. In addition, the PDF support now correctly handles thumbnail images and hyperlinks.
I don't know if you're trying to open them, or edit them, but that's the way to go if you want to create them from scratch.

I know I can make PDF's with oo, but I'm trying to be able to read them.

I already have Foxit, I need a portable PDF reader that doesn't leave registry entries etc.
My Quickport Template can be used to make Foxit portable. I created just for that purpose. It will help you make any program that uses a registry entry. This is true for any program that uses the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key to store its information. As HKEY_CURRENT_USER is writable by the user who is logged in there would be no problems, even if te admin locked the registry from being written to. All programs run by the user, if it stores settings, writes to this key.
What this means is you can make foxit protable. I understnad the differences of view for those who see portability of apps. Mine is if I can get it to work, I will tell others how. That is why I wrote the quickport. Try it out and see if it works for you.

Where do i find it, and how do I use it? (bearing in mind, i'm not a programmer)
You can find it in the development forum. Actually I think it is only a couple messages down from this one. The download link is there. You do not need to be a programmer. Just change a few settings in the template, the instructions tell you how and use the nsis compiler included to compile. The instructions state how to do this. Let me know if you have any problems.

I didn't know what to do, once I had extracted the icon and found the registry entry.

1. Use a icon extracting program to extract the ICO file from the executable, or copy it from the program folder if there is one, and then copy it to the directory with the NSIS script.
where is this?
Am I supposed to install something before I use this program?
Maybe I'm just thick but certainly a detailed 1,2,3 of how to use it would be a good thing.
Take a brand new user like me, I'm told to find the NSIS script...
What script? where is it? would I even know what it was if I saw it? (don't forget I havent clapped eyes on this app until today, so things that are obvious to you, because you use it regularily will not be so apparant to a brand new user, hence the neccesity for an idiot proof readme.
do you see what I mean.
There's no such thing as an "idiot-proof readme." Doesn't matter how simple it is; someone will always have trouble with it.

I have no witty remarks or quotes to share at the moment.
Head over to portasoft and get PortableNSIS. Once you fill out the script, put the icon in the same directory. make sure you rename it to what the value 'SNAME' is. Then all you have to do is double-click on 'PortableNSIS' and drag the script to the compile window.
oh, and make sure there are no'*' in the names.

You forgot to tell him which file the script was, which was one of his questions. I'll answer it.
NSIS scripts have the file extension .nsi.
