Vista 32 versus 64

I am in the market for a new laptop and I am starting to see many coming loaded with Vista Home Premium 64. My question is, should I get one with 64 loaded? Is it better to stay with 32? Will most programs run on 64? Thank you.

I installed XP x64 yesterday

I installed XP x64 yesterday and found that almost all new software runs flawlessly.
With programs that are not being developed for several years, crashes are common though.

Probably.

Getting Vista 64-bit is a good idea. Vista likes 4GB of RAM if possible, and you can only get that with 64-bit. (Now some people will tell me that you can get 4GB in 32-bit, but you only actually get 3.25GB. The rest is for indexing VRAM.) The future is 64-bit, and with Vista 64-bit now over a year and a half in the market, it's a solid product. Almost all of your 32-bit software will run (unless it's really old). Also, there are more security features in Vista 64-bit, which I won't get into, but they're really good. Wink

The biggest difference between 32 and 64 bit is that 64-bit can index 128GB of RAM, whereas 32-bit can only index 4GB (well, in a way 3.25GB, explained above).

Not really 3.25, exact number

Not really 3.25, exact number depends on a computer.
