EyeOS Portable Dev test 2

EyeOS Portable Development Test 2
Submitted by Bobert on July 7, 2008 - 2:00pm

Application: EyeOS
Category: Operating systems
Description: EyeOS is an awesome, web-based, open source operating system. It comes with a basic word processor and spreadsheet, as well as a presentation viewer ,several games, and many other fantastic features.
Note: EyeOS works best in Firefox, preferably v. 3, or else you will not be able to use many of the effects.

To quit the EyeOS server, just double-click the tray icon.

This is my first portable app ever, so I would like feedback, positive or negative.

I have tested it on XP service pack 2 in a limited account, worked fine. Even though a box may pop up saying some features have been disabled and you need to unblock the program, it still works fine.

Download EyeOS Portable Pre-Release 1 [4.68MB download / 5.4MB installed]

(MD5: c052b761f0e1bd3f2cb685a7b58ce451)

Release Notes:Development Test 2 (2009-07-07):
Fixed a couple bugs where apache crashed
Now opens in portable Firefox (if it exists)
Added a tray menu option to kill the server
You can just double-click the icon to quit
Better compression
Deletes the logs on exit

Nice...

Here, I'll give out some pointers:

  • Pre-Releases are for apps that have been qualified (and older apps). Now Development Tests are used in place of Pre-Releases in Beta Tests.
  • For release notes, you say stuff like:
Development Test 2: Fixed this, use this thingy to clean up the stuff that was left behind with DevTest 1.
    Development Test 1: Initial Release
  • In the naming of the installer, it should be EyeOS_Portable_0.8.1_Development_Test_1_en-us.paf.ext

I'll add more when I get time, and nice job :D!

Okay, more pointers time:
  • (Just a hint: you can do <a href="http://website.com">Link</a< to make a link.)
  • In appinfo.ini, the publisher is The EyeOS Project 2008 and PortableApps.com
  • Don't forget to compress the files under App using the PortableApps.com Compactor
  • Just an opinion, I think the EyeOS files should be kept in Data by: When installed, the eyeos files (under htdocs) are kept under EyeOSPortable\App\DefaultData\Settings\htdocs and in the launcher it checks if Data\Settings exists and if it doesn't, it creates the directory and then copies over the default installation. If it does, then it just keeps going on. (That way it can be backed up with the Backup Util.)
  • The code for the launcher isn't under the Other\Source directory.
  • The ReadMe.txt is for Sumatra PDF.
  • Lol, the Apache license isn't the GPL License Blum
  • You can remove the code from line 211 to line 215 because that's useless.

Once again, nice job, it's perfectly functional on your first try :D.

Yeah, he said the code is not needed, not that it is invalid code ;). It'll compile with unneeded stuff, as long as its actually valid code

Congratulations!

Congratulations for this software! It's very useful. I sometimes use eyeOS in the official webpage and with this I can work in shared computer with a Pendrive. It runs slowly in the Pen, but I think in the HD will work good. Look at "Operating System Linux in Portable Version" and help with new distributions if you have time.

eyeOS is not an real Operating System

Linux runs as an Operating System, but eyeOS is a web operating system, written in PHP, and requiring Apache to work. It is really quite limited in what it can do.

It's pretty nifty, though.

I know that isn't a real operating system. There are more, for example Desktoptwo (or Computadora.de), or G.ho.st

Rather puzzled

I've used a demo of EyeOS in my browser... why would I want a "portable" version? I thought the whole point of a web-based OS is that there is nothing to download, all the software resides on a server somewhere... or is this a portable version of the server software? I'm kinda confused by this.

Secure, personal

It's secure, as only you can get it
It's personal, as you can customise it as you like! Smile
It's not dependant on e.g. eyeos.info being available.
It's ... eyeOS. Blum

It's redundant - An OS within

It's redundant - An OS within an OS
It's slow - Granted I've not tried a local install but on the web it feels like I'm running Win 3.11 all over again.
It's missing the point - I thought the whole idea of having a "web OS" was so that you didn't have to carry anything with you. If I forget my flash drive I'm SOL.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but it just seems a very bizarre choice of app to be made "portable". What next "Internet Portable"?

Having said that, I applaud the efforts of those dedicated to bringing user-friendly portable versions of quality software to the masses.

The autorun doesnt run

The autorun of the program doesn't run. I tried to rename .\App\EyeOS\EyeOS.exe to the same name of the autorun and when I execute the autorun, I only see two processes: "mapache.exe". When I close one, Internet Explorer (default navigator) opens the web: localhost:8800. Only works the .\App\EyeOS\EyeOS.exe application.
And one suggestion: Add eyeSync for sincronization with the server.

I've attempted download of this file twice and each time Trend AV says trojan detected.

MAL_DRPR-3

I will submit what piece of the file that I am able to download to Trend for closer inspection. I will also attempt a TotalVirus submission.

This is a very old thread and the developer hasn't commented/responded since 2008. Development is clearly at a dead end and therefore there is no download available.

Known problem

this is a known problem with ALL portable apps from this site because the scripting language used on this site for the launchers is commonly used by Trojan writers because it offers the ability to encrypt the .exe so it can be read by AV's so most free AV's see this type of script and automatically flag it as a virus/Trojan this is a false positive
https://portableapps.com/support

this program is open source and used by many users if it contained a virus/Trojan it would of been flagged by another user by now and removed by a moderator

Brain Dead AVs..

What hunted hawk is saying is mostly true. Not all applications are encrypted (so as to make the file smaller) with UPX, so not all will come up with errors. Unfortunately, not all virus searching products are smart...

Did you scan it @ www.virustotal.com And also I host it on my site. I wouldn't host it if I knew there was a virus. It is a false positive. See the bottom of this page (the "AntiVirus and AntiSpyware False Positives" part)

Only a few programs detected one. Don't worry. It is a false positive.

Well it's dropped from 11/33

Well it's dropped from 11/33 (33.33%) since July 12th, that's saying something Sad but the author might want to get in contact with the companies involved and submit a False Positive report.

5 is still a little high after a month and I can see why it could, and obviously does make people nervous.

whats the point

First post in a long time but whats the point in having a web based server on your flash drive if it is meant to be accessed via the public server or a personal server.
why not just install it on your home pc and then access it from any where.
Just asking.
by the was this is like the other side of the future. one side is portableapps and webapps is the other side. you only need one or the other unless u just want to be redundant

Amazing! A few things though

1. It's not pre-release yet.
2. Try uploading it to MediaFire. It's the site people usually use if they dont have it on sourceforge.

Edit:

3. When I run it, the site asks for an installation or something
4. I get a box saying an admin needs to unblock some features of firefox.
5. There is a slight thing in the PAF installer where the windows box comes up to copy some of the files. This should be done in the installer

What to Do

I'm probably just ignorant, but I just have a couple of questions: first, What exactly is eyeOS designed for(i.e, what can it do), and second, how do you get it to work? I open Mozilla Firefox, and try to start eyeOs, but the only thing that happens is a window opens and says nothing can load, and a small icon down in the corner of the taskbar.
