KingMax SuperStick 8GB incredibly slow!

Hey all,

Just got a Kingmax Superstick 8gb (http://www.amazon.com/KingMax-Microsoft-Certified-Drive-Washer/dp/B001AM...) yesterday and install portable apps plus FF3, OpenOffice, Putty, 7zip, Gimp, FileZilla, KeePass, VLC, Task Coach and GNUCash on the drive and when running FF3 I am getting realllllly slow speeds (2x-3x slower than native firefox), so I have a few questions:

1) Does having more apps slow down PA even if Im just using one app at a time?
2) Does FF3 usually run as well as a native install of FF3 or is it usually slower?
3) Does the Kingmax have bad transfer rates? I couldnt find info online about them. Is it a crap drive? (it was only $25 bucks for 8GB, water/heat resistant and incredibly small drive, so maybe its just not fast because of all that?)
4) What things can I do to speed up my drive? Use different formats, settings, etc...
5) Anyone have a Kingmax superstick and getting good speeds?

I am using this on a Dell XPS M1530 with Vista (4gb ram, core2duo, etc...) so I don't think that its the fault of the computer Im using.

Thanks for any help you can offer, cheers!

Dana

I don't think that more apps

I don't think that more apps in your flash drive slows it down

Use this to benchmark your drive

http://www.simplisoftware.com/Public/index.php?request=HdTachUsage
writing is usually about 20% slower than reading speed

i have a kingmax superstick

i have a kingmax superstick as well and for me it is also slow. i think the aim of that drive is for portability and not so much for speed. that is why i use my cruzer micro for apps and have the kingmax for a backup of my documents
it transfer rates are:
Writing speed: 5.18 MByte/s
Reading speed: 20.3 MByte/s
(on the 2 gb version)

FF3 is slow because you have a low writing speed

I use two flashdrives: buffalo firestix 4GB RUF2 R (=expensive I know)with TurboUSB driver Reading about 40MByte/s( 34MByte without), writing about 32MByte( 28Mbyte);Sandisc cruizer micro 8GB 28MbyteRead/22MbyteWrite
-> both work fine with FF2, but with FF3 only the Firestix gives me the same impression of "speed" in browsing I am used to with FF3 on HDD or with FF2 on flashdrive. Ok, you can tweak it as proposed on the support side -> still you will have the impression of Firefox loading very slowly and needing some time for swapping from one tab to another, because a writing speed(?) of 5 Mbyte/s isn´t high at all

Same problem with Corsair Flash Voyager 4Go

Hey Dana and everyone,

I have the same problem with my new Corsair Flash Voyager 4Go. Most of the stuff works fine (though a little slow), but Firefox is really bad... I have followed the instructions on the link that kai.inouye has provided, and it's a little better, but still really slow...

The weird thing is, I don't know how fast the KingMax Superstick is supposed to be, but my Corsair Flash Voyager is supposed (and is) to be really fast on writing AND reading... I can't see where that slow motion comes from Sad

If anyone has a suggestion, I'd be glad to hear it ! Would using an older version of FirefoxPortable help Dana or me ?

Thanks and good luck to Dana and Chris, too.

As far as I know

Only the 3.x branch of Firefox is so slow(=write-intensive).
Try the latest 2.0.0.16, it should be much faster.

Hurray !

Yay for FF2 and for Simeon !
It does work a lot faster, it's awesome ! Thanks a lot for your help, and Dana, maybé you should try FF2 too, you'll find it on the FFPortable page, in "other versions".

Thanks again Smile

Hey thanks everyone for the

Hey thanks everyone for the feedback! I didnt get the email notificatio for the comments so I didnt even know you guys responeded. Ill have to try out FF2 because it is insanely slow and annoying. I may also look into getting a faster drive. This drive is so sweet, i knew it must of had a downside.

Thanks a lot for all the useful information. I will post my findings after I change the FF version.

Cheers!
