A No-Go Apps list Needed

but i sereously think we need a MANDITORY no-go apps list because no one seems to be reading the request apps requirements. we would have things like Microsoft Windows and Office as well as other apps like closed source apps.

[Subject line clarified by mod Tim]

I like that...

I also had another idea.
On the apps list, at the bottom, there should be a little note:

Don't see the app you want? Try the Development Tests!

*Off topic* I think the apps list sidebar is getting a little old, isn't it?

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

If nobody reads the existing

If nobody reads the existing guidelines, why take the time to write out more?

TBH saying (almost) nobody

TBH saying (almost) nobody reads some info is not an excuse to make the info unavailable for people who DO read it. It's like saying (almost) nobody reads License Agreements, so we should not bother with writing them and putting them up.

Seriously

We need to start using subject lines that tell us something about what we're going to read.

Bad examples,

Help Needed!
Testers wanted!
What do you think?
An idea...
ok i know you have heard this before... Wink

In this case a better subject line would have been
"No-Go Apps list Needed"
"Rejected Apps list Needed"
etc.

Does that also include reply

Does that also include reply titles?

Seriously, maybe we could do without reply titles Blum

There already is something like that

See this question on the Unofficial FAQ.

k...

replying to my own old topic.

the fact still remains that we should have a list of apps that cannot be made into portable apps for various resons. we could say that new people should browse the list in order to get a perspective on what cannot be made a portableapp.

We need an outline of what

We need an outline of what types of apps will even be considered. Open source only for John, and general guidelines for other developers. A list of problematic (e.g. Java) and outright rejected (e.g. MS Office) apps would supplement this.
Without guidelines we will still have new people asking for apps that, to the veterans, seem outrageous, but may not be on the list and that a new person would not realize is a bad request.

Vintage!

Info on page

The request forum has a sticky with unofficial guidelines, but why not have, right between the title and the "Post new forum topic" link, something like this:

"It is illegal to modify commercial and closed source software. Therefore, programs like Windows, Office, Dreamweaver, etc. cannot be made portable. Please do not request these. [more info about what is required. SHORT] Also, many programs are currently under development or have been discussed. Please search (using the search at top right) the name of the program that you are requesting before posting your suggestion."

This is just an idea of course, and I don't know what the exact restrictions are, but something short like this might help. The list should include the most common offenders, probably.

Would this help?

I am not my signature.

i guess that would...

but i was thinking more of a list. something you could browse, and if your app wasnt on the list, then you would have to see if it met the guidelines. if it met the guidelines, you could request it.

also, we might make somewhat of a criteria search thing where you are at a webpage and you click on certian links according to the question asked, such as "Is this program made by or owned by Microsoft". that link would take you to a certian page that tells you a few reasons why it cannot be made portable.
