Mah-Jong game

Hi.
I wanted to ask you if its possible to make a portable app version of mah-jong (the game where you have to match similar tiles).

Thank you.

Do you

have any suggestions?
A good open source mah-jong game you know/like for example?

Its a lot easier to take a look at a game than to come up with one.

Its not open source

but the only example I can think of is "mah jonng for windows" (http://home.epix.net/~rbalewski/mjwin1.shtml)

This one sounds decent, although I've never tried it. The cool thing about mahjong is that no matter how basic the game is, it's still fun. I could be in monochrome and still be excellent. Wink

Do We Need That?

*sigh* You're so picky...

But yeah, really, how does an application defined as '
Multi platform Mahjong game.' with no commits and no releases and no webpage seem decent. Blum

lol

Sorry. I was just looking for an example. Like I said, it would be really hard for a Mahjong game to NOT be good. I didn't even realize there were no releases. There are quite a few listed on Sourceforge.

hey...

i know you can find some old abandondware DOS ones. that is where i got mine. and it is usually a single .exe so it is portable as is. i even run it straight from command prompt.

Here's one. I'm about to try it out now. I'll let you know what it's like.

EDIT: This is a good game and has a GNU license, but is probably not what the OP was meaning when they requested Mahjong. This is the traditional Mahjong, not just a "matching tiles" game. Very nice though. I'd definitely like to see this portable. There is no installation necessary so I imagine it's already portable, but I'm not sure about what it leaves behind.

I don't know very much about

I don't know very much about programming and such, but I may try my hand at this if you guys are willing to help and give me some feedback. It looks like a good beginner program as it doesn't require an install, and I'd really like to get into this as it is extremely interesting to me.

Well, after some searching it

Well, after some searching it looks like this has already been done by Ryan McCue. You can get it here:

Looks like I'll have to find another app to start learning with. lol

I might be wrong,

I might be wrong, it's been known to happen Blum
But I think Ryan has abandoned his app, it died in beta.

And If I am wrong, I'm sure Ryan will correct me Sad

Ryan's version is not the

Ryan's version is not the solitaire matching game the OP was referring to. Ryan's version is similar to the one played by my wife and several of her friends and has a lot of similarities to Gin Rummy with betting.

It is best to realize that almost any game played with Asian tiles is called 'Mah Jongg'; that's like calling any game played with western cards 'poker'.

Good try, though! Wink

Ryan's version is traditional

Ryan's version is traditional 4 player Mahjong, and the exact same program I was going to attempt to portablize. It's a good game that I recommend trying out.

Mahjong Solitaire is what the OP is referring to, and I'm researching a couple now that I may work on. Smile

Can someone help me?

I'm trying to run xmahjongg with Cygwin. I got it compiled and installed (as far as I can tell). I first got an error about cygX11-6.dll being missing. I located it and copied it into the src folder. Next I got an error about cygwin1.dll was missing so I located it and copied it to the src folder. Now when I click it a console window pops up for a second then nothing. This is my first time using Cygwin, although I used to run Linux on one of my old computers without any major issues (although I'm not proficient with a command line by any means". Do I need to have the folder in the Cygwin directory? What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Maybe this should be moved to the Development forum. Should I create a new post there or can this topic be moved?
