CoolPlayer+Portable Crashes on New Machine

CoolPlayer crashes when I move it from one machine to another. It's installed on a Western Digital portable USB hard drive. Both machines run Windows XP Service Pack 2. At the office, I have three monitors (1280x1024 each). At home, I have two monitors (1680x1050 each), but I don't think the screen geometry is what' causing the problem.

I tried deleting coolplayer.ini before running the program on the machine I'm transferring to. That works fine. The program doesn't crash. Clearly the problem is caused by something in the ini file. The obvious thing to look for was screen geometry, so I played with that, but no screen address changes in the ini file could keep the program from crashing. So I tried the possibility of path problems.

I found that, if I edit the ini file before running the program, and change the drive letter on all three path lines that have it, the program works just fine. Here are those three lines as the file existed when I left the office a few days ago:

Directory=F:\Playlists\
SkinFile1=F:\PortableApps\CoolPlayer+Portable\App\CoolPlayer+\CoolPlayer+PortableSkin\CoolPlayer+Portable.ini
RememberLastSong=F:\My Music\Ottmar Liebert-Luna Negra\The Hours Between Night & Day\14 Albatross.mp3

Here are those three lines after making the manual edit, running the program on my home machine, and then exiting the program:

Directory=L:\Playlists\
SkinFile1=L:\PortableApps\CoolPlayer+Portable\App\CoolPlayer+\CoolPlayer+PortableSkin\CoolPlayer+Portable.ini
RememberLastSong=L:\My Music\Tchaikovsky\Tchaikovsky CD#4 Disc 4\01 Symphony No. 5 in E minor Op.64 Andante.mp3

I'm tempted to suspect that the "Directory" line is causing the problem. I chose to put my Playlists folder at the top directory level on the portable drive.

yes

I think its not the directory line but the LastSong line.
Either CoolPlayer+ doesnt like long paths (like OOO) or its a character or the space.

Possibly

It's a possiblity, but I'm not sure offhand. Any chance you can narrow it down a bit further? The drive letter should change on each launch as you move between PCs. Any idea why it's not updating? You're launching CoolPlayer+Portable.exe right?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

To have a partial solution

To have a partial solution for pathnames being to long the main app folder could just be named AppMain, AppBin or AppExe instead of the full app's name. Would that be an idea? (I mean it really doesn't matter what name it is as users normally not look at that folder.) In some cases the name of the main application can be long and using a short name would (partially) solve apps with long names (like Virtual Volume View for example). Maybe even another short standard name would do as well. This would have no impact to the platform other than you have one less variable to handle/change.

Anyway just a small suggestion, I hope you consider it regardless if this is the issue responsible for some issues of getting path names to long.

I've been using this lately

I've been using this lately at work and have been having an issue with it. It crashes at random times, seemingly for no apparent reason. It will be playing for hours on repeat and just crash out of the blue. One thing I have noticed though is that it never crashes during a song, only in between them. Just thought someone should know.

hmmm

hmmm I can't say but what I'll try and do is compile a fresh copy of coolplayer and see if that will fix that issue for you
