Whenever I use Firefox portable it takes forever to load and then always crashes.
This happens no matter which computer I run it on, no matter how many times I download a newer version and even when I changed the driver it runs from.
Has this happened to anyone else? can anyone tell me where and whats the problem?
Ok, you might want to try reinstalling it, it could be too many add-ons, so try to cut down the number of add-ons and see if it gets any better
try a fresh install without any add-ons first and see how it runs.
please report back with your findings.
also what kinda of USB stick are you using and how big is it, you may have a slow USB. and just to be sure, what version of Firefox portable.
If it's FF3 reintall and disable the session manager.
also clearing the cashe and saved junk might help as well,
Lead, Follow, or get out of the way.
I tried to reinstall firefox but I still cant get it to even start.
Im using version 3.0.1, by the way, and whenever I start firefox nothing happens but I can see it in the processes tab in the windows task manager.
Do you have any more suggestions?
FYI. If you use AVG's Free version 8.0.138 and are also using FF 3.0.1, the AVG LinkScanner feature crashes the browser every time. AVG fixed the toolbar issue in their Paid version 8.0.156, but AVG has not updated the Free version yet.
The only workaround for now is to reinstall AVG Free without the LinkScanner feature so FF 3 does not crash.
You can also improve it's performance by going here
https://portableapps.com/support/firefox_portable#performance
Or,You can try FF2, here:

The read and write intensity is lower on Firefox 2 is lower than version 3.
I myself am encountering the same thing. My Firefox keeps crashing. Upgraded to 3.0.01 but still the same. Re-installed twice but still the same. Had followed the instructions to improve the performance but still the same. And thing is it's only recently that I started encountering this problem of my Firefox crashing. In the past it was ok. In fact, today alone it's crashed more than 10 times already.
As recent as yesterday, my USB drive's FireFox 3.0.1 PE started crashing on startup. So far, I've tried:
1. running chkdsk on USB drive and found nothing.
2. starting with a clean profile.
3. reinstalling and starting with a clean profile.
I've yet to test it on another windows host machine. My instincts tell me to suspect disk corruption, especially since I'm constantly switching the USB drive between Mac and Windows - and I've had problems in the past, but with a different USB drive. So, perhaps there's a better tool than chkdsk that can help me out here. FWIW, I'm currently using a Sandisk Cruzr Micro 2.0 GB USB drive.
I'm in the the process of updating my office LAN to Windows XP SP3. And after installing SP3 Firefox 3.0.1 PE started up normally for the first time since the annoying crash problem began.
So, I suspect that a previous automatic windows update broke FF PE for me. It wasn't until after I installed SP3 that FF PE stopped crashing and started working normally. That's my hypothesis anyways. YMMV.
Other possible reasons that might have caused FF PE to crash unconditionally:
1. Corrupt system file(s) (e.g. .dll). Which one(s) I don't know. You'd think if it was Explorer or something major it'd be more obvious. The thought behind it all, being that installing XP SP3 replaced the corrupt system file(s) which FF PE depends on and therefore FF PE stopped crashing unconditionally.
2. Trojan/virus infection. Similar to the first, where installing XP SP3 replaced the infected system file(s).
Unfortunately, I don't have the time or resources to properly debug the problem further. I just thought I'd share some more thoughts from my experience in the hope that it might help someone else.
The parent post explains that they encountered the crash on multiple computers, but didn't provide more detail beyond the obvious fact that they were Windows-based. Exit question: Could all of those computers (tested by shoresh319) been Windows XP-based, had Automatic Updates enabled and been tested during the same time frame, in which I suspect a recently installed update broke Firefox PE? The more I think about it, the file corruption theory seems more plausible.
I've been using the portable Firefox 3.01 ever since it was available. Just this week, it started crashing. When I go look in the FireFoxPortable folder, the only file there is FireFoxPortable.exe. Everything else is gone. I've re-installed 2-3 times in that folder. It'll work find for a little while (or sometimes just a few minutes) and then crash again taking everything in the folder with it.
The only add-ins I'm using are AdBlock Plus and Flashblock.
I'm going to try re-installing to a different folder now, but this is getting frustrating. I've had to revert back to using IE. *gag*
