Notepad++ Crash on Language Switch

This is sort of a strange problem so, please, bear with me.

At home I had UltraEdit installed for code editing. At work, on my USB drive for portability, I used Notepad++ (Portable). I grew to like it so much that I installed the full version (non-Portable) on my home PC for code editing THERE too. It was bliss. Then I noticed that the home version was version 5.0.3 and the portable version was 4.9.2. I'm kind of OCD about stuff like that so I checked here for the update and... it was nowhere to be found. I waited a little bit and no update came out but I noticed that there was already a portable version of sorts available on the authors' website. So I deleted the PA version and installed the authors' version and I was up-to-date and happy.

Then it stopped working Sad

The problem is this: whenever I switch from plain-text to something else, like PHP (be it from opening a PHP file to switching the language manually from the menu), N++ crashes. Or, it freezes, and needs to be killed from the process menu, but yeah.

So, I deleted the authors' version and installed (the now up-to-date) PA version.

And, it has completely retained the problem 100% Sad

The strange thing is, it only does it on this machine. I'm at this one maybe 14 hours a day 3-4 times a week. The other times I'm on different machines for maybe an hour at a time and both versions run fine. And it runs fine at home. So, one of the portable apps did something not-so-portable to this machine, but I don't know what.

Does anybody have any clues or suggestions?

Windows XP SP2 on all relevant machines. Dinky little 1GB Cruzer for the flash drive. All the work machines are exactly the same but I don't have their specs. Home PC is P4 2800, 3gig RAM.

Hm

What account type do you have on the PC were you have problems? Did you run it as Administrator?
I'm asking this cause thats the only account where the Launcher does something with the registry and thus something that could remain.

Did you ever eject the drive without safely ejecting it first or kill the PortableApps.com launcher?

Does it work correctly if you use a clean install, i.e. delete the /Notepad++Portable folder and reinstall?

Upgrade Waits

On a couple apps like Notepad++ we strongly advise that you wait to upgrade as major point releases often have major issues. With the 5.x release of Notepad++, within 2 weeks, first 5.0 was released and had some annoying bugs. Then 5.0.1 was released and then quickly pulled due to brokenness. Then 5.0.2 was released. As we were testing 5.0.2, 5.0.3 was released, so we ended up releasing that a few days after the standard Notepad++ release.

Did you reinstall a fresh copy of Notepad++ Portable? It could be an upgrade issue. Otherwise, I'd suggest checking the Notepad++ forums as it seems like an incompatibility on your PC of some sort. Could be a corrupt shared DLL there somewhere.

Not Administrator.. I'm not

Not Administrator.. I'm not sure what type of account it is, but as far as I know it's not locked in any way. It's worth noting that all of the work computers are exactly the same and I've logged in to all of them using the same credentials. It's just the one that I use the most that isn't working.

Unsafe ejection could have happened. It's possible. But I don't know for sure.

A clean install doesn't work, unfortunately. Every time I've gone to a new version, I completely wiped the old one before installing the new one.

I checked around on their forums and didn't find any bug reports with my problem but I only went a few pages deep. They also didn't seem too friendly :/ so I thought I'd try here first.

Thanks for the help and suggestions though. I know it's kind of a weird problem.

Local

Try installing Notepad++Portable locally to rule out drive issues.
