Pidgin: PP 2.5.0 crashes on buddylist mouse over

I upgraded to PP 2.5.0 and it appears to crash when I mouse over the buddy list. I renamed the installation directory and tried a fresh install with a single AIM account. It crashes too when I mouse over the buddy list. It seems to happen when buddies are moused over in quick succession. Is anyone else having this problem?

Nope

Works fine here on Windows XP SP3. Could you please provide more info: OS, install location, etc.

Not here either

This works fine for me. I just moused-over about 40 contacts in quick succession and no issues. Please post the information that John requested.

More info

Error Info:
AppName: pidgin-portable.exe
AppVer: 2.5.0.0
ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 7.0.2600.5512
Offset: 000378c0

SanDisk 4.0 GB USB Cruzer Micro (via USB 2.0 port)
Microsoft XP (version 2002) SP3
1 GB RAM
3.00 GHz Pentum 4 Dual Core

I discovered some data corruption on my USB drive so I formatted and restored from a backup. Then I made a duplicate of the Portable Pidgin directory before installing the new version over the original. It still crashes when I select buddies. The copy (old version) still works fine. Let me know if you need further information and how to get it for you.

Local

Install the portable version to a local drive and just add your login info fresh (don't use your old data). See if it works properly there. Trying to work out whether the drive is playing a role (which is possible if there was corruption).

Results (msvcrt.dll version issue?)

I installed PP 2.5.0 on my C:\ and added a single account. The error persisted. I then checked my system for copies of the msvcrt.dll file and found 12 (with 4 distinct versions). Since I was having problems with version 7.0.2600.5512, I copied the next recent version 7.0.2600.2180 into the C:\PidginPortable\App\Pidgin directory. With this setup I still get the error message with version x.5512 although the errors don't seem to happen as fast.

Could this be related to an open ticket with Pigdin? (http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/6141)

From the sounds of it, the issues don't seem to be related, but this looks to be an issue with the local PC.

The next step, maybe, is to try a local install of Pidgin and just see if it crashes there with the same issue. I'm willing to say that it will.

What's more local?

I have confirmed that the issue persisted on both USB and C:\ installations. Where else should I place PP to test a local install? If it is a problem with the local computer why should the previous version of PP work just fine?

By local

I mean an install of the local version (ie - got to pidgin.im, download pidgin and install it as normal).

The issue could be with any number of things that pidgin changed from 2.4.1 to 2.5.0. I'm currently working on figuring out an issue I have when pidgin crashes on close....so it could be any number of things.

Regular Pigdin 2.5.0 Go Boom

I understand now, my apologies. And yes, non-portable Pigdin 2.5.0 crashes too. *sigh* I'll just stick with 2.4.3 for now.

That's what i figured. There seems to be a few kinks in this release that they missed. But now we know this isn't a PP issue, and it's an actual Pidgin coding issue (or GTK).

Thanks for going through this, and sorry we couldn't fix it.

Fix is here

http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/6627

Visit the URL above, download the file, and put it in the pidgin portable directory.

this is a Windows GTK mouseover problem, works fine for me after replacing the file.
