Are you looking for popular mainstream movies? If so, there is no free, legal way to do that. And if that's what you're looking for, it can not be discussed here.

dude, go to your local library, get a card if you don't have 1, then you can BORROW movies, watch them and return them, great system. and it's FREE!

If you want to download YouTube videos (it's legal/free), just get yourself the Better YouTube Firefox addon and you can use that to download YouTube videos.
It is illegal to download any copyrighted material from the internet. Period. The only way you can get free content online is if it was Creative Commons (or something of that nature). I will repeat: it is illegal under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act to download copyrighted material from the internet. That includes ripping DVDs. (I will say, I do rip DVDs, but only so I can view my legally purchased DVDs on my iPod touch.)

The question is a difficult one to answer.
YouTube provides user provided content.
If someone uploads something that is illegal how do you sort thru what is and what's not.
MY view on YouTube is that I download what I like. It is a public site, it does not require a membership to view content. It is not hidden or secret.
They, themselves do not provide a way of directly downloading their files, if you have such a method it is up to you and your conscience to decide if you should. If They provide content which should not be there they should take it down. If not people go after them.

I think they do have a way to download their vids without software, just type in "kiss" in front of the url, after http:// and you will be given options to download it, and example is this.....
But the only thing is it downloads in flv, so you would need to either convert it or use a mediaplayer that supports that format.
