I encrypted a few files last week using Toucan 2. This week I can't descrypt them. I go to decrypt. It asks for the password twice. I am quite sure I have remembered the password correctly. It is one I have used before many times and have a simple method to remember it (letters form 2 words jumbled together). It just says decrypt failed in the log.
Any ideas?

I also face the problem of no decrypting my folders/files. My passwort is ok, I erased some files which hasn't the cpt extension but decryption isn't working eiter on USB stick nor DVD. Made a test with a new file and the same password and it works fine. Would like to try decryption from the command line but don't know how to do. Need an explanation for an user, not an expert, I'm afraid, so a simple example how to get on the command line to my stick and what to write in would be very helpful.
Would like to find the solution because I really love this programm which has with the clever backup functions AND the encrypt/decrypt function all I need.

Brigitte, my first suggestion would be to just copy one of the encrypted files to a new folder and try that, just too make sure it isnt clashing with anything.
Then it really is worth checking capslock, I have done that before, confused me for ages!
If neither of those work then I shall write up some instructions for you
thanks for your kind reply. I did as you suggested and tried several files but it was always the same: decryption failed. I checked before if everything is alright on my notebook and couldn't find a mistake which is to blame for. The same files are on a DVD encrypted with the same password and it also isn't working, so the USB stick is ok. I've done another sample, copied a new file on the stick, encrypted it with the old password and then decrypt and this worked fine.
Is there maybe a restriction in the amount of files?

you trying to decrypt on the DVD? If so you will need to copy them somewhere else first as DVDs are read-only.
is rewritable but not in daily use, at most just used for testing files or little programs. My important files are as copies on the USB stick and (not decrypted) on an external hard disk.

I do not know what to suggest, we can try using ccrypt directly to decrypt the files, you can download a copy here and then extract the files to the same folder as the files you are trying to decrypt.
The open up the command prompt, Start -> Run, type cmd and press Ok. You then need to navigate to the folder that the files are all in. To change to a different directory just type it's letter followed by a colon and press enter, for example to change to the E drive, just type E: and press enter. To then change directories type cd followed by the directory name and press enter, for example to change to a folder called TestFolder type
and press enter. To move back up a directory if you make a mistake type
and then press enter.
Once you are in the correct folder you will need to use the following command to try a decrypt,
hopefully this will give some more information that helps.

for the very detailed instruction. I did so and came (on the command line)just to the point where I was asked for the password. No matter what I tried to type in, nothing happened. Just the enter key was working, brought me to the next line who appeared then: repeat password and again no type was working except the enter key who brought me to the next line: password not matching. Of course not, because as I said, I could nothing type in! I tried to find the reason on the ccrypt homepage but couldn't find something helpful.
I will make some more tests with toucan to find out what the basic reason for not decrypting is, maybe I'm successfull. Will inform you later.

I have tried encrypting an unneeded file and then decrypting it straight away. That worked fine. I can only assume that the password I think I used was not in fact the correct password. Oh well. Can recover the info from another source.
