PNotes Portable 4.0.112 (i.e Finale) PreRelease 1

Its Here! The long awaited PNotes 4x Series! And, since I think I have nothing better to do with my time, here's a PAF'd version!

Application: PNotes
Category: Office
Description: PNotes Portable is sticky notes manager with skins, flexible display options and a built-in scheduler. New(Among other features):

  1. Search/replace capabilities (for all notes or for individual note)
  2. Docking to any side of screen (each note can be docked/undocked individually or all notes can be docked/undocked). You may set custom appearance for docked notes.
  3. Ability to randomize color of newly created skinless notes
  4. Setting newly created note "on-top" is now optional
  5. Options to hide/show toolbar on notes
  6. Formatting commands (like at note's toolbar) added to note popup menu under "Format" submenu
  7. Ability to add any info to skin (up to 255 characters) and displaying this info at skin preview window
  8. Support for vertical skin's toolbars

The installer by default install to X:/PortableApps/PNotesPortable4xTest If you wish to overwrite your existing PNotes installation, please make a proper backup first.

Also, this version will append your Notes.ini in the settings directory. I don't know exactly how this will affect everything, so, if you want, copy out out the notes.ini and replace it after the install. I would prefer a few brave testers checking this out for me.

Request.-

Hi all,

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but since I know that lamer is going to read this thread, I'm going to place it here anyway... Wink

I use PNotes mainly in two places, Office and Home, at Office I have a 1024x768 screen resolution and at home is way much bigger (I don't remember the amount), I notice that when I organize my notes in my home PC and close the App, some of the notes at the office PC do not appear (they are there but out of the screen), and when I organize the notes on my office PC, they appear in the wrong place on my Home PC.

So the request is this... is it possible to make PNotes automatically "see" the screen resolution and reorganize notes more and less in the appropriate position???

Thanks in advance.

At Least, At Most

At the very least, on first display, it can check the screen width and height and readjust the notes that would be offscreen to be onscreen.

At most, I'd suggest making positions relative when in use portably. Instead of storing the fact that it's at 420px from the left, store the fact that it's .3325 from the left edge (left position divided by width). And then position appropriately on display on a new screen (.3325 multiplied by the new width). Relatively positioned notes! You don't need to expose it in the interface... just as a commandline switch. I'm sure everyone here would love that Smile

Some good new features!

Some good new features!

After a few minutes testing I have some interesting things to report.

1. If you dock an empty note that has not yet been saved, then change from non-skinned to skinned mode, the empty not saved note...
A: Moves upward
B: Loses it's docked status
C: Moves off screen if it was docked to the top.

2. If you dock a note to the left and another to the top...
A: The second one docked covers the first
B: The first one will not present itself unless you centralize it or undock and move the second one.

3. Hiding a docked note...
A: Causes any notes docked further along to drop back and fill it's spot
B: Drops it's docked status and returns it to the pre-docked position when you "Show" it

John's idea of relative screen position sounds good, but it needs to be fixed position. Other notes docked on the same edge shouldn't just steal it's position if it is hidden. Also it should check to make sure it isn't overlapping notes as in 2. above.
I think I understand why you have the notes assuming the space of a note that is no longer there. It's because of your scrolling of notes that are docked off the screen right? Interesting concept. I had never seen anything like that, and was not expecting that arrow at all 8o

P.S. I just enabled scrollbars and after the reload of all notes one is missing. A note titled "test" that I had deleted all the text from. Pnotes asked if I wanted to save the changes to it, I said yes. All notes reloaded, and test was not visible on screen. It is still visible in Control Panel so I tried "Centralize" and "Restore default size and centralize" neither has brought "test" back. Double clicking on it in Control Panel also has no effect.

Edit: After a restart of Pnotes "test" reappeared.

Well, well, well... And I've

Well, well, well...
And I've thought nobody is testing the app Smile
1. I wanted to make notes position relative even in current version, but then decided that docking will solve the problem. May be I should add ability to save position relatively.
2.

dock an empty note that has not yet been saved,
then change from non-skinned to skinned mode, the empty not saved note...

Wow, this is the case I've never checked Smile
3.

you dock a note to the left and another to the top

Yes, the second will cover the first. Dock one to left and another to right Smile Well, I'll try to think...
4. Hiding a docked note - yes, other docked notes will fill its spot and this is IMHO the normal docked behavior. Try to close any docked window in Visual Studio, for example - other docked windows will automatically fill the remained space.
5. The case with toolbar need investigation. I can tell nothing right now.

Well, you collected enough "features" Smile - at least a week of work

Well, it didn't take a week.
Updated to 4.0.101 (here - https://portableapps.com/node/14266#comment-89404):
1. Added relational notes positioning (Preferences -> Behavior -> Relational notes positioning)
2. Fixed bug of improper saving not saved yet docked notes on notes reloading Smile i.e. when you open new note, make it docked, but not save, decide to change program appearance from skinless to skinnable (or vice versa).
Other "features":
Making docked notes unvisible will remain the same, i.e. other notes will fill the gap.
Collision of two "docked" lines of notes, when leftmost or topmost or ... notes are overlapped - I have no idea and put off the decision till next version.
Phenomenon with note disappearance - have tried to reproduce it on 3 (three) computers - nothing, i.e. nothing disappears, everything is visible.

Relative position and size

What a great app. I find it useful and am using it most every day. The issue I noticed is how it appears when 'open all' is uses on my computers. I do not use the docking choices, but arrange the notes in columns, with left column for 'stuff to do', the next one for 'to do today' and the right column for 'upcoming events'.

When I use the 'show all', they come up minimized with only enough space under the header for the tool bar. Double clicking the header does not extend them as they are already extended, but smaller. I must grasp each note on the lower right corner and resize them individually again. And again the next time.

Not an issue with only a dozen or so notes, as I can uncheck the 'roll up/down' feature and leave them all open, but if a large number of notes are envisioned, like enough to need the search feature, then the desktop would be papered with notes.

It would be nifty if we could double click the headers to make it a small footprint and not change the original note size for their extended 200 x 200 size.

Thanks for the useful tool and listening to me try to explain this issue.

Another bug

I noticed the last few days, the program starts automatically as it is supposed to with the box checked, but it doesn't seem to retrieve the saved 'hot keys' or the notes themselves. If I then close the program and open it manually, the hot keys are back and the notes appear.

This is so useful throughout the day! Thanks again for your efforts!

This isn't a bug with the program. I'm assuming your launching PNotesPortable.exe?

Place a shortcut to that file in your startup folder. PNotesPortable redirects some settings, and when you use the autostart, you lose the redirection as it starts PNotes.exe

Actually....

I merely checked the box that said "run on system start". It ran, but didn't pick up the notes or hot keys. I made a shortcut and placed it in the start menu and it works fine now. I guess the bug might be the direction from the check box to direct the "run on system start" to the correct program. Thanks for asking OliverK.

Fixed improper saving of rolled notes size - thanks to Raleigh034.
Raleigh034, the problem with autostart may have the following reason (I just think so, need to check it): when you check the option to autostart it creates shortcut in startup folder - but shortcut to program file itself, not to Oliver's launcher. When you restart the program from launcher it obviously takes all configuration and notes. But again, it's just a supposition. Try to create shortcut to launcher in startup folder and see what happens.

Added one more (third) parameter to -config or -conf command line switches.
The first two remained the same:
notes.ini file path and data directory path respectively.
The new one (Oliver!) is the full program path (include name) which will be used for shortcut creation in startup folder if user will check autorun option.

Upgraded to 103. Sorry that 102 didn't get working right. Add the command line so that if you do set it to autorun, say, for a home install, it will go to the launcher. Thanks to lamer for the addon.

Installer will also delete your Notes.ini and copy new one in. Sorry if it messes up some really cool things your did.
Thanks to a great suggestion on IRC, it now renames Notes.ini

The notes also start minimized, my bad- they won't do that next time. I'm just to lazy to fix it right now as its a development test and all.

Well, Oliver - something

Well, Oliver - something wrong with "data" section in "notes.pnid" file that you create the first time program runs in order to show "greeting" note. When this note loads it gets improper data and therefore any subsequent attempts to point to its group etc end with crash (for example it gets group id like 213214671 or something else, and it results in null pointer in future). That's also the reason this note is not visible and has unreadable caption. I replaced "data" section with the same section of one of my notes - everything worked fine.

No crashes (at the moment) -

No crashes (at the moment) - well done!
Two small suggestions:
1. Installing without having "Additional language support" selected does not install "lang" folder. If there is no such folder with at least one .lng file, app cannot show tooltips for note toolbar buttons.
2. Why the default note is called "DefualtNote"? Smile

Fixed very rare bug: if you have fast users switching enable on XP, then after switching back to desktop with PNotes the notes' text disappears and you should select all text by Ctrl+A in order to force it to be visible. "close" and "hide" buttons disappear as well.

1. The application still

1. The application still starts without default language settings. IMHO you should have the:

[lang]
file=en_us.lng

at \PNotesPortable4xTest\App\DefaultData\Notes.ini
2. Default note remains "defualt"

Actually I'm ready. I waited

Actually I'm ready. I waited for translation, but they (translators) must have been all on vacation Smile Well, I have now 10 language files, so if there won't be any serious bag today, I think we can make RC (I think 3 times will be enough - for the sake of propriety :))

RC1 at:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pnotes/PNotes_4_0_109_rc1.zip
Includes language files available for the moment (english.lng as well, there was some gaps in previous).
Also a small fix of relational positioning for multiple monitors.

Pre-release 1 works on Vista but...

I've just tried PNotes Portable Pre-release 1, both as an update and as a new install.

The update leaves the note style the same and I couldn't find any issues with it and left nothing obvious behind. The same goes for the fresh install, and I do get that first run message and the PortableApps.com skin

There was however a few very minor things that I noticed. In the menu, it shows up as PNotes Portable 4 Beta, and the splash screen still is the development flash screen.
