Another ilegal distribution...

Check this one... http://www.lupopensuite.com/

And is also distributed in this website (in Spanish)... http://www.jambitz.com/descargas/2008/08/22/lupo-pensuite-v662

How do I know that is an ilegal distribution? because it's distributing CCleaner, Firefox, Foxit Reader, IrfanView, and Opera with the platform, and the platform is just a skin of portableapps.com

Democrakey

IDK if it's illegal, they do credit JTH and PortableApps.com, but no sign of credit to Mozilla for Firefox. I may have over looked it.

Anybody notice the DomocraKey Home?

This page that they call the DemocraKey Home:

http://www.democrakey.com/democrakey-home/

Tells me

"Congratulations, you have successfully installed your DemocraKey. Start searching with Google. Remember, if you want to surf anonymous, just click the little onion on your toolbar. That will turn anonymity on and off. Surfing anonymous is slower, so only use it when you need it. Enjoy!"

I did not install that software. That message is slightly astonishing.

It is

cause only John has the right to modify and distribute Firefox. I think that everybody can distribute an unmodified installer of Firefox or Firefox Portable but they modified it (not using our installer and using the ini to disable the splash). So yes its illegal.

Wow

Talk about outdated software. Think they'd remove it or update it Blum

i dont think this is illegal...

i checked it out and all of the stuff on lupo links here, all they are really doing is packaging all of our apps together with their theme.

for instance, their Firefox Plus is our FF portable and if you click on the "Launcher" link on that page it links to this site. also, apparently not all of the software there is from PApps.

i am going to do a further investigation, especially on the menu itself because it does not look like our menu after all. (see the information section>screenshots only the first screenshot looks like our menu)

I think

the menu is based on ASuite and from the screenshot it looks like they removed our bookmarks.

well...

althogh it didnt work on WINE (i am on ubuntu right now) everything about the menu is different exept the overall look. also, i only found one possable infringing app, VLC portable. otherwise all of the apps have reference or links to this site or the respective sites they were made on (I.E. apps even we dont have).

otherwise everything about the menu and apps is different including the file structure including our apps. meaning even our apps have been modded for this suite.

Yeah,

I can see why this would seem illegal but I don't think it is.

http://www.lupopensuite.com/info2.htm

Scroll down to the license part.

And they even linked to us on the other projects page.

unless mozilla gave them

unless mozilla gave them permission to release firefox, it is still illegal, no matter how many links to our site they provide. PortableApps.com is the ONLY thrid-party (that I know of) that had permission to modify Firefox/Thunderbird/Sunbird and redistribute them still keeping the original branding and artwork.

Also, they are violating the GPL for ANY of the applications that they took from us, they are relicensing under the Creative Commons, instead of keeping GPL

"unless mozilla gave them

"unless mozilla gave them permission to release firefox, it is still illegal" ..
Permission to release a modification of an alleged Open Source app ?
Am I the only one here who thinks that's a contradiction in terms ?

I say like Ed_P : Let Mozilla police their stupid tri-license themselves .

Mozilla has trademarked

the Name Firefox (and Thunderbird, etc.) so erleasing it with the name is what makes it illegal.

Their app is OSS and thats not the prb

Wait. Firefox is OSS, and their Tri-License is not problem here. The problem is the copyright over the logo and brand.

You can't use the name "Firefox" if you modify it. That is the problem. Most people just change the name to "IceWeasel" or other names, therefore, successfully overcoming the branding problem.

About Mozilla getting dealing with it themselves... I have no opinion about that, but it is our packaging modded... so we may come into problems.

Lawyers??

If Mozilla feels that there is a legal problem with lupopensuite's use of their products Mozilla's lawyers will contact them and resolve the problem. And whether Mozilla does or doesn't isn't our problem.

If lupopensuite is in violation of a GNU license I'm not sure there are lawyers to enforce it. There are several OS licenses some of which overlap if I'm not mistaken.

I'm not a lawyer, any more than any of the rest of us, just expressing an opinion.

Okay, I Sent a message to the owner of the site.

He says he got permission from all the developers of those apps.

I will screenie the message and show it to you if he gives me permission.

Did you get permission from Mozilla?
