Firefox 3, Portable Edition Question

I am interested in learning the optimum procedure for upgrading a U3-based installation of Firefox 2, Portable Edition (v2.0.0.16). I want to begin using Firefox 3, Portable Edition (v3.0.1), but am concerned because I read on a Mozilla site somewhere that they recommend using a fresh, v3-only profile when switching to version 3 because of some issue that Firefox 3 tends to have with importing Firefox 2 profiles. Has anyone heard anything about this? And would simply deleting the FirefoxPortable folder from out of the PortableApps folder sufficiently “uninstall” Fx 2 or does some special procedure need to be performed to keep the PortableApps suite happy and in order?

Also, any pointers you might have regarding working with, backing up, and/or managing Firefox and Firefox Portable profiles would be eagerly received! (And from within Ubuntu, in particular--man, I am such a noob!)

Thanks a lot!,

P.S. Yes, I did read the section 'Upgrading Firefox Portable' on the F.P. web page, but I just can't get that darned Mozilla page out of my head... Also, the current installation has something wrong with it that is making installed extensions non-functional. So, the only part that I really want to transfer over are the bookmarks.

Well...

Normally I would say "just install the new version right over the old one after you made a copy of the old profile so you can restore it if something goes wrong."

Maybe in your case, its better to do everything manually because non-functional extensions are likely to cause errors:

I see you only have bookmarks you want to keep, so lets save them first:
Open your U3 Firefox, go to "bookmarks"-"organise bookmarks" and then "file"-Export" to export all your bookmarks to a html file and save it to a safe place.
Now you install the latest version of Firefox Portable. You open it and import your bookmarks from the html file.

Hope that helps Smile

I'm not clear...

So, you don't think that I need to delete any folders or anything? I am concerned that whatever the glitch is in my current profile that's causing extensions to be non-functional would likely be passed right along to the Fx 3 installation. How does one uninstall programs from PortableApps? Is that even possible since Firefox is integrated with the suite?

That leads me to another question. I downloaded and installed the PortableApps suite twice on this drive. Even so, it wasn't until I installed the OpenOffice.org v2.4.1 .paf file that any of the OpenOffice apps ever appeared in the program launcher. I am positive that I downloaded and installed the proper file according to the web page, but yet I have no idea why OOo was absent until I added the .paf for it. PortableApps.com Suite™ Light v1.1 35.0 MB (36749552 bytes), right?

Thanks for your help!,

Light = AbiWord, no OOo

The Light edition includes AbiWord instead of OpenOffice.org to decrease install size. It's meant for smaller drives that can't fit OOo.

Oh Geez!

That would explain a lot; how stupid of me! Is there a way to "uninstall" the defective installation of Fx2, PE? I imagine that doing that would be simpler than transferring everything from OOo...

Thank you so very much for the wonderful results of all of your efforts and work on the PortableApps project, sir! Simply marvelous!

Thanks!,

yes

uninstalling PortableApps is easy:
Just delete the folder in question. So if for example you want to get rid of Abiword, you delete the folder /PortableApps/AbiWordPortable/.
