Portable Apps Installer

I really like this program and I find myself using it more and more but I am wondering first of all, why does it go to the background once I've executed the application and also, when I select Eject Media, how come it quits the application first?

The Menu closes as soon as it

The Menu closes as soon as it looses focus. Thats handy cause normally you dont need the menu after you launched the App you want. But you can change that behaviour: Just add RemainVisible=True to the ini file in PortableApps/PortableAppsMenu/Data/.

It quits the Menu because it cant eject the drive if the menu is still running. If you hit exit, it will only exit the menu, if you hit eject it loses the Menu and opens the safe eject dialog.

Oh and welcome here Smile

Thank you

..and thanks for your reply.

I will modify the .ini entry but of course it would be nice if there was an option "always on top" like in Instant Messaging programs for example that I could use.

About the Eject feature, I'd prefer it if it would eject the media first and not the program because I use them on my system and I like the My Documents Folder due to how Vista works when re-installing, a god-send really but as for checking for updates, I don't really think it should open any browser and there should be a separate menu for going to the website.

well...

I hope I understood you right so if you dont need the eject feature, dont use it and use exit instead.

About the Eject feature, I'd prefer it if it would eject the media first and not the program

The media that the program is running on must not hav anything running on it when it ejects. Therefore the Menu must close before the media is ejected.

Any clarifications please ask

Then just press close!

There are two buttons in the menu at the bottom, eject and close.

Who makes this thing anyway,

Who makes this thing anyway, or is it "open" source.

It was a good first effort I suppose

Pity I cannot minimise without going to the systray, let alone being always on top.

Also, a pity the forum doesn't show views for post but it's good to write a separate title so easily.

yes you can

The normal behaviour is that the Menu minimises as soon as it looses mouse focus. You can use the ini to change it though.

Not very intelligent I would say

but then again it would appear to be the weakest part of the platform, hard coded executables and so forth, big deal it closes the program before ejecting the media does one have to be a genius to make it do that or was the "bundle" the most important factor when this thing started up.

I understand this is a group effort but this thing is pathetic.

?

What do you mean with "hard coded executables"?
The next version will have the ability to rename and change a lot more things than the current one.

Ahh, Good then I may be a happy customer after all

I'm hoping for alot to change with the next platform, including mainly rename and folders as well as search since I can only imagine in the future the list will be huge, especially when one considers they don't have to be all from the one source.

I also would like to see Always on Top implemented like it is in Instant Messaging programs for example as I believe I should be able to do alot more with this installer thing that merely install programs and...

.. I want to be able to double click on it and have it pop up and go back to the system tray as I desire, as well I don't want it opening behind other windows but instead I at least want the choice since the current situation is utterly ridiculous and I beg anyone to disagree.

Then dont use the eject button on the menu. Use the standard windows eject button.

The idea behind the eject button on the menu is so that you can eject the drive that is running the platform/menu

Hi

Not everyone uses these programs portably you know and even the survey takes account for that fact.

I like these things because always when windows fails, my apps are always there waiting on fresh install, my emails, web links, passwords recent files, word processing.

The only thing I'm not really happy with is the shortcuts situation.

Hi Simeon

I put the line in the file you said and still it goes behind other windows, so judging by the intent of the program I'd say it's not really working as it ought operate.

forgot to ask:
Are you using the latest version of the menu?
If you don't, download the Platform from here.

well

What about sub-folders, anyone thought of that.

Why is this thing so "hard-coded" for executable files.

I thought it was truly "open" as the home page says or is that a joke.

It's a good program but why

It's a good program but why can I not set it to be always on top, for the second time?

You dont

I re-checked and you cant.
the RemainVisible=True entry just prevents it from fading out if it looses focus. You might want to request this as a feature to John T. Haller.

Hi Simeon

I would like to request it as a feature since it's this guy's pgm I'd like to see improved.

Other apps like MSN Messenger and whatever have it "always on top" and this program I'd argue is about as important even if not so widespread or known.

Thanks again
