U3 Launchpad - is it needed ?

Hi all and first, I want to apologize if this is question has been asked before but searching the forum did not answer my question exactly.
I wanted to ask if I can uninstall the Sandisk U3 launchpad from my "Intuix 2 GB U3 drive" while still having the U3 functionality which I want of course since I installed the portableapps launchpad and I like it much more than the dumb U3 launch pad which does not many options IMO regarding managing shortcuts of apps...etc
(P.S. The original U3 launchpad that came on the Intuix was NOT from Sandisk - I don't remember - but all what I remember is that it was having old version so I grabbed a U3 launchpad from U3.com's site that was having version 1.6)

The U3 Launchpad application

The U3 Launchpad application is not needed to work with PortableApps.com applications and can be removed. But, removing it will not 'free' your USB drive from U3. If you notice, when you insert the drive, it creates two drive letters. One is the 'fake CD' used to boot U3 and the other contains your information. Unless you remove the U3 entirely, you will not regain the space. Since you have a mixed bag of SanDisk and Intuix on your USB drive, I'm not 100% sure the SanDisk U3 remover will work. It should since SanDisk created the technology and licensed it to other companies. Here is the link:

CAUTION: This will erase your entire USB drive. Backup any data first!

Yes, it's needed

Read the quote from you op carefully and think about it...

If you want the U3 functionality you need to have the launchpad on your drive.

The question is what functionality of U3 are you referring to.

If you want the password protection built into U3 you cannot uninstall the Launchpad or remove the "second" drive letter. But you do not need to use the launchpad itself, except for the entering of the password. Just how this will work will depend on the version of the launchpad you are using.

So the question is precisely what is it you want to be able to do ...?

U3 Launchpad

Maybe the question can be asked in another fashion.

If you have a USB drive with U3 installed, what is the optimal method for adding the portable apps menu/launcher to the drive? Is is to fully remove U3 or is it to somehow call the PA menu from the U3 menu.

My original drive was without U3 and I plugged it in and auto launched PA. Having just picked up a new one today which contains the U3 launcher is prompting the questions.

Guidance will be appreciated.

There is a

program here called Shortcut Creator 4U3 and made by Smithtech. It lets you add a shortcut to the U3 menu for any Application on your drive. Its not officially supported by PortableApps.com but it works very well (I tried it myself).

Thanks

Thanks for that utility. I had also found it in another post. I used it to add PA menu to U3. Startup works very well!! Now to just be able to close PA automatically when you eject U3...

Thanks again for the info.

youre welcome

Unfortunately you cant close the PortableApps.com Menu automatically. You could just use the U3 Menu and drop the other, or you have to close it manually.
