sorry to spoil the good feeling from releasing this but it's not working for me. i go through the steps and have it install the add-ons then it goes away and never comes back up. i kill songbird.exe, reopen songbird portable and it goes back to the same setup. i have songbird 0.6.1 installed and firefox open if that affects anything. also i'm running it from the desktop not a flash drive on winxp
Try it without add-ons. We need to figure out if it works right BEFORE you go messing about with it

THANKS RYAN!!!!
I shall download and install!
Just a note....your release date says it's march 4th

FINALLY
Thank You Ryan

Works well on my Vista Home Premium Laptop, will test it at work next week and see how it performs on a locked down system.
I've just tried it on Vista Ultimate SP1, and although the initial start up was a little sluggish (possibly due to a combination of a slower thumb drive and running vista on 2gb of ram) it runs well and haven't encountered any problems so far with using the program.
There was one thing I did notice though, even though it's nothing major. I noticed that the music download folder defaulted to the users\xxxx\documents\music folder (where xxxx is the current user) and the file download location defaulted to the desktop.
As far as I can see, there isn't a way to change this. I'll chat to the developers about supporting our global variables.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Thanks for checking that I did have a thought though...What if it could be set to "Always ask me where to save file" instead of having a specific download directory?
I have it done to now set the download directory to your drive's download dir (if installed with the platform) on first run.
I'll get this new version up ASAP, but it will only affect new users.

Thank you Ryan for this great app. Shall check it out soon!
I was beginning to think I'd die before it happened.
Anyhow, downloading and trying it out as we speak. Thanks so much, Ryan.

Finally...an easy way to browse Shoutcasts (I was too lazy to look for a client in the past). Now I've got some smooth jazz on tap whenever I want it. There's no jazz radio station here in central Joklahoma.

Thanks again :o)
This installed eventually and seems to work well on XP. First time Ive been able to use the browser thats incorporated into songbird
Anyway just a note for people installing, it took about 5 minutes between splash screen and the next screen but in the end it all worked and installed with the addons. Just a note to have some patience and this gem will work.
Thanks again Mr McCue ;P

Thanks for this port! I was looking for so long for a portable music player like this one! Is a little bit slow but it's very complete.
I have a problem though with the add on that adds iconify capability to Songbird. It simply doesn't work. The add on also exist for thunderbird and firefox. When I get home I'll try it in the portable versions to see if it works.
Thanks!
To quote John from above:

Test the base app without add-ons. Besides, add-on problems should be taken up with the developer of the add-on, not the developer of the base app.

Does it work in normal Songbird? If not, there's no chance of it working in the portable version.
Portable versions are not ports of the original app, but are rather just a package of them. I didn't recompile Songbird at all and am using the standard distribution (albeit, with the VLC DLLs compressed) from getsongbird.com.
"If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate."
Tried this program off my ipod. When I tried to load it just stopped. No windows or error appeared, it just looks like it stopped loading. After looking on my pc (windows xp x64 sp2), I realized I had an older version of songbird installed (but not running). Would this cause the problem?
Thanks Ryan. Will test it asap.
Thank you Ryan! I'd say i LOVE you but im not that kind of a guy. Thank you SOOOO Much Dude!
Na na na, come on!
I'm glad it's finally here. And I'm sure it has nothing to do with your packaging or whatever, but it seems to run Uber-slow. Also, the only real function this serves is as a portable jukebox with a built in browser, until it becomes truly portable.
Either way, Nice job and let's hope that mozilla takes care of the speed problem. They did with firefox3

Finaly!
I have been waiting for this at a long time!!
Is this not meant to sync with my ipod? Songbird works great, but I keep plugging my ipod in and it is not showing up.
you have the ipod support addons installed?

Should be back up now.
The problem isn't the price, it's the fact that my host won't let me get extra bandwidth without changing plans completely and I'm fed up with them so I don't really want to do that.
BuddhaChu, thanks for the offer, but I'm actually working on a different solution. Watch http://code.google.com/p/mirrorpress for updates on that

Are there any outstanding issues (that are known) at this moment, or is the code stable?
Songbird Portable leaves these folders and files behind:
I'm using WinXP Pro SP3.

Go to File > Import Media, and import all the files from the folder you wish to play, or if you already have all your music imported, create a playlist for each folder, then play the playlist for the folder you wish to hear.
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
how do i do this there is no menu named import media. the way i can do it is to go to File > open a file. but only one file can be selected. in media player i can select a folder and it will play all media from it or any of the folders in it. this is what i am wanting to do if it is possible or maybe it could be incorporated into newer versions. i have been in the songbird forums themselves and suggested it there. as the whole program is still in development.

i have an import media option in my file menu....odd that it's not there for you
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
What you need to do is
File>Scan For Media> Select your base music folder with all your artist or album folders in it and voila - loads songs, meta data etc
Enjoy : )

Mine says Import media, just to be sure that s/he isn't looking for a specific "Scan for Media"
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
remember this is a portable version. i may want to play some music files from a particular folder on the host comp or from my flash drive. mainly i just want to know how to create a playlist its confusing to do that,. i create a playlist but cant import any mp3s into it. i must be missing something

Just an small note or note, don't use the autopuodate if it asks, and manually diable it from the tools > options?
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
Does anyone know where it is stored? I tried looking in all the folders, but so far I haven't found it yet in the usual spots.

Hey Consul
First - The Scan/Import Media option. This is weird as I dont have an import option only scan for media. What OS are you running on?
Second - Playlists. I haven't found the playlist folder butthere is a import/export playlists addon that you can use. think this because Songbird doesn't naturally save its playlists in the usual manner.
Hope this helps.

All are stored in the database. It doesn't save PLS files if that's what you're looking for.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
when i opened the website a box under the web page appeared where all the mp3s listed then i clicked on download
i asked this in the songbird forums
where do the mp3 files go after they have been downloaded from a website. i was not asked where i wanted them to go. so do not know where.
here was the response
Go to Tools-Options and look under Music Downloads.
It shows location (depending on OS) where all the music will be downloaded by default.
You can change it by using "Browse" button and navigatin to any folder of your choice
but i cant find that it is not listed there
is the portable version here missing that feature or have i missed something.

EDIT never mind. It quit being problematic. Ignore everything except the stuff about Songbird being awesome...sorry about that!
this is really awesome, the only problem being that when I hit the X in the upper right hand corner, it kills the window, but I still have to go to the Task Manager and stop Songbird.exe.
Similarly, when I install an add-on, and click the 'restart songbird' button, I have to kill Songbird.exe and SongbirdPortable.exe from the task manager.
Other than that, everything seems to work. iPod, add-ins, skins, etc. Way cool!

I just saw "itunes" in the topic name, and i couldn't resist. Are there any new more or less "bug free" versions out yet?
There was an updated topic right on the front page...
https://portableapps.com/node/17000
Can Songbird connect with an iPod? If so, how?
Yes. There is an add-on for the iPod here:
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/12
+ Didn't someone lock this thread?
There's an ipod extension included in the base application now if you use the installer to install it locally on your hard drive.

People may wish to read this before using or installing the iPod addon, it's currently broken and may delete all your iPod music without asking.
