Another(?) way to use PortableApps portably

Just a quick note to whomever is interested:

I just registered for the forum, and felt that my way of using PortableApps was not adequately represented in the registration form.

I use the suite on all my PCs (4 physical, 1 work laptop, a couple of virtual machines, and 1 USB stick) - however, I use unison to synchronize the PortableApps folder between all of these instances. (Any other 2-way, conflict-resolving synchronization utility should be fine.)

This way, I can install or upgrade apps on any of these PCs. Synchronizing propagates the changes everywhere. As long as I make sure that apps aren't open during synchronization, this works great. (Firefox and Thunderbird are particularly sensitive.) I get harddisk speeds, and usually won't need my USB key.

In addition, I've coded a cygwin script which automatically builds a nice folder structure with PortableApps shortcuts inside the Quick Launch toolbar on each computer.

Thanks for a fantastic suite!
Cheers,
Robert

Wow,

people really do love customizing the Suite config :P.
I got a question though: why do you need so many copies?
As for those Quick Launch shortcuts, it sounds just like DeskLinkz (which makes desktop shortcuts).
Yes, I do agree that the Portable Apps info is sorta incomplete (sometimes I put apps on my PC due to space issues), but the website admins have more important things to do (sometimes :P).

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

Well, clearly I don't need

Well, clearly I don't need all my installed apps on all of the PCs in question. However, since the suite takes relatively little space, I realized that it's easier and less time consuming for me to share (synchronize) the same setup on all PCs instead of configuring and updating each by hand.

The best examples are Mozilla, Thunderbird and FileZilla - I use those everywhere, and I appreciate having access to the same bookmarks etc. without even thinking about it. I've installed dozens of other PortableApps, but use them rarely and on few PCs, maybe even only one.

Since you almost asked, my PCs are:
- Server 1 (W2K3, AD, Exchange, PDC, media library, ++)
- Server 2 (W2K3, Backup AD controller)
- Vista portable (development and gaming)
- Vista portable (kids web and gaming)
- Media center (XP MCE)
- Work laptop (XP, owned by client)

With this many PCs, I upgrade, repair and reinstall fairly frequently. Having the exact same base setup on all is a great timesaver.

But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
