Hi guys, just wanted to know if there is any support to open any MS Office 2007 files. I'm not able to open any Word documents with the docx extension. Same goes for Excel and other Office 2007 applications. I know I should actually look at the OpenOffice website, but thought that any of you guys might have a work-around. Office 2003 stuff opens fine.
When trying to open a .docx document OpenOffice presents me with a "Filter Selection" box with all different formats to choose from. The closest match I have is that of "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP" I then get error message stating "Error reading file"

There may be a plugin for viewing the docx format, I don't remember though. I do know that once OpenOffice.org 3.0 is finished, it will support the microsoft office 2007 formats.

DOCX is a proprietary format only used in Word 2007. No other office software including older versions of Word will be able to use it. I've had friends burned by this one numerous times (one friend had his job search delayed 3 months because recruiters couldn't open his resume so they just tossed it aside). There is a setting in Word 2007 to set it to use real DOC format which everyone is able to use (new/old versions of Word, WordPerfect, Google Docs, OpenOffice.org, StarOffice, etc, etc)

I thought most of those office apps were going to support ".docx".

most "will", but don't currently, and it really is a format that should be avoided currently. Not enough people are using Office 2007.

A small personal note according to 'standard 'doc' files. I used to use Word 6 doc file that windows 98 and 2000 wordpad could open and read. Not that long ago I noticed the same file could not be opened by WordPad on a Windows XP machine. In this light I suggest not using ANY .doc format as MicroSoft might change its mind and relying on everyone to have Word is just to much of a stretch.
From now on I am going for more basic formats like .txt or even .rtf. Heck, it seems basic .htm are a better format than using any .doc format. Eventually there is also .pdf, and while most people do have a pdf reader file formats like .rtf seem to be easier.
Just my 2 cents.
I had just noticed with my new vista sony tz that they removed the ability to open .doc in vista wordpad. Which was unfortunate, since I've been using it like that since forever. Much quicker to load and featured enough for like 80% of my needs.
But hey, I'm just rich text format kinda guy.

I have installed this also on number of installations, tried the linux versions too, but to open a .docx I have so far never managed.
The document will open, but I can see just empty page, so this is not really what is needed.

the Novell addon only works with their fork of OOo. So, like a lot of people, I'm waiting for OOo 3.0 GA. For now, the best alternative is to request a file copy saved in a compatible format; that is what most companies that get outside submissions request (e.g., Recruiters and resumes).
No one should send a file from one individual/company/organization to another in DOCX or any of the new Microsoft formats. 95% of people won't be able to open it.

I know there is a compatibility package for Microsoft Office 2003 to be able to open DOCX documents, which might help for those who have not upgraded. I have no plan to upgrade, as I also use OpenOffice.
Most folks don't have it, though. And folks in offices can't install it.

Too bad it doesn't come directly with Office Update.
It's really special that some companies or individuals even install special purpose software just to be compatible with some new MicroSoft format. We all know those formats have a short lifespan usually.
If you are really stuck & need to view the file without using a convertor, you can rename the docx file to a zip file. Extract the contents then open the xml file in a web browser/html editor or notepad. There will be a lot of xml formating code but look for the lines starting with (wt), this will be the actual text of the document. Also when you unzip the file you will see a subdirectory called media. If there are any pictures in the file, they will be here. I did find a small and useful converter on the "http://www.nativewinds.montana.com/" website.
We work with a lot of small communities and small engineering offices, many of whom are probably still working with Office 97.
I use OO.org portable on my flash drive for my personal stuff and will be glad to get v3 so MS documents from others can be used from my OO.org portable.
For work documents that need Office 2007 features, we "Save As" PDF files for publication. Finally strong>, MS allows a widely used format as output from their Office apps!!
It's not just small offices. I don't know of any of the big companies I used to work with that have switched to Office 2007 from 2003. And, when they do, they don't plan to use the new DOCX format due to compatibility issues.

Unfortunately it seems as though many companies are now adopting the office 2007 format. I work at the University of South Australia and we have adopted it for all internal and external communications. Not only that I had to teach students how to use Word 2007, what a pig of a thing it is too!
On a brighter note though, Microsoft have announced that Service Pack 2 for Office 2007 will include support for ODF, so we can just send our ODF documents to MS Office users.
