Hello, just registered and wanna say hi.I dedicated most of my free time i have to create portable apps from normal applications..eg tuneup utilities programs and some major applications.
I use thinstall and virtual pc.i also use portable apps from your site.
Now i am having a problem with one app which i just cant decrease the size of the .exe which is 30mb.I searched the net for a similar one which was a mere 14mb.I just cant seem to decrease the size, any help on this. When i do decrease the size with the PEcompressor program my portable app does not work anymore, and this decrease is like 1%.
I have edited the .ini file for thinstall for compression but seem to have a 30mb result.I have alreasdy merged the registry values and patches in it.Is this the best i can get..30mb.
If some one can show me how a person can make tuneup utilities 2008 to 14 mb i am all ears.As my one is 30mb.

problems with compressing a standalone portable app .exe
What do you mean by "similar"? The same program packed by sb. else?
Usually the problem with incompressible files is that they are compressed already or (rarely w/out compression) encrypted. If they are compressed, you can not significantly reduce their size further. If they are only encrypted, it's possible, but takes really a lot of time. And some skills too.
I didn't see the program, but I think that practically the only way to reduce it's size is to remove unimportant files.

I have removed the junk files and repacked it,still only 30mb.
What i meant by similar was that i compared my portable app to the other one,They are the same application but the other one is half the size of mine.It works the same and launch speed for decompression is faster.
Reason why i created a portable version was that virus programs was giving false positives on execution.
I guess that you can't compare internals because the other one is thinstalled too?
I googled and installer size is

I used thinstall, and the app was 30m.Do you know how to midify the block size in the ini file for the app,i think its got something to do with that.
I'm almost sure that you simply didn't turn compression on. Block size tweaking can give you like 1% gain, not over 50%. Can you submit your thinstall config file together with config of the programs main directory (I don't remember how does Thinstall call them)?

i took more junk files out and i have a exe that 16.5mb...i guessi am happy with that.btw how do i submit it...ok here is the file http://www.zshare.net/download/18351334e72faeb8/
We only do Open Source apps and your packaged app and the way you packaged it aren't allowed here. Thinstall requires a $5,000 license and I assume you didn't legally pay for it.
For for 'thinstall' on these forums for more info.

In case that you didn't notice, OP gave us sources. The .ini file. This is almost exactly what are launcher-only releases in the beta forum, with the only difference that dablakmark8 posted sources only, without any executables.

This file looks OK...I would have to take a deeper look, but as you're happy with it I guess that I don't have to.
