If all software were to be portable, then there'd be no point in having this site, and nobody would need a PC. It's too idealistic (like communism :P).

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
Many of the posts in general are incorrectly posted so you have to search the entire forum anyway if you are looking for TBP help for example.
My vote goes to a single forum with tagging to allow you to filter responses. However if people are not posting in the correct forum how many will take the effort to add the correct tags

I use a 160GB (HDD) and there is no space for my music
But then I only have a single disc with almost everything I need on it, including my virtual machines.
So yes, I also want everything portable it makes life so much simpler.

yes. As we've seen here, a lot of the good vibes from the portable apps is how compact they can be in size. The practices of trimming code bloat, making upgrades and sharable programs is a great thing, especially in this day and age when we can and do get new computers every 2-4 years, or have to do full reinstalls more frequently. Having the programs be isolated and not muck about with other OS/software is a good thing.

Yes, I wish all software would be portable. However this will not happen with (m)any commercial software because their license forbids usage on more that one PC.
But I hope all Open Source software and all freeware will eventually become fully portable. The reason is simple: having your software portable means easy migrating and your software can be taken anywhere (increasing the exposure to people who don't know it also).
Another reason is that it's easier to backup and restore that software thats rooted in a system. I'm using more and more portable apps 'installed' on my HDD also. And when the Portable Updater comes it's even easier to maintain all apps (portable) to keep current.
could easily mean one user. I know that isn't what the licensing folks do in practice, but that seems to be the ultimate endpoint. Whatever the program uses to make it identify the computer as it's only installation could have its analogue in the usb.
I am fine with having to go online to get unlocking codes.
To reinstall, you would still have to verify as you would anyways with a new computer install.
As it is, my laptop is getting smaller and smaller, I now have the 11.1 Vaio tz, so it's pretty much the smallest you can get w/o going to say the ??QCQ?? or whatever handheld but still runs WinXP/Vista there are out there.

I'm less likely to share my portable application on a external device, than I am on a PC/Notebook. On a pc/notebook you can create many users all of whom could have access to the licensed install of an app.
However, if I install an app portably on my own external device, the intention is that it is for my sole use, not to be shared. Now suddenly a family of 5 will need 5 licenses instead of 1 which means more money for the software giants. But they always think of the threats first before they realize the opportunities!
Think of land-line telephones vs mobile phones. Same thing with portable (or possibly personal) apps. so there's no reason why the commercial guys cannot also jump on the portable bandwagon.

Take note that PortableApps mostly create Portable version of OSS (Open Source Software) applications. Commercial, closed-source applications are not supported, but those can be found on other portable application portals.
Yes for free stuff but with ££££ apps you should have the choice.
