Please don't use .tells in IRC for anything important

Increasingly, devs are using .tells in IRC for important stuff. Please refrain as tells and other non-live IRC messaging are NOT reliable. This stuff belongs in the forums. Especially when there's already a topic for it. The user may not be in again for days. When they are pabot may not be online. Or pambot. Or whichever other bot. And you may accidentally close a window and if you have logging off (default in Pidgin) *poof* your important message is gone.

So, please use the forums for real messages. If you need to reach someone specific, email.

How about memo serv?

How about memo serv?

Same Thing

It's pretty much the same idea (besides the whole closing the window and losing it thing). But I'd totally suggest MemoServ over pabot.

MemoServ stores

MemoServ stores all messages and doesn't delete them until you tell it to (as far as I know). Also, many people won't know how to use MemoServ.

I think that for anything serious, a forum post or an email will be a much better solution.

And come to think of it, do we really need a bot at all?

I agree.

To me, using using .tells for an important message would be like leaving an important message on a sticky note on someone's front door. Use the forums, then it's there permanently.

Yep.

I agree, John. (I hope I'm not guilty of doing that? :P) I certainly don't want to get rid of pabot, but it's not there for important offline messaging.

I agree.

If pabot was more reliable, I wouldn't be so quick to agree, but it's currently running off a computer at my house, which is not the most reliable machine ever (neither are the other computer users).

John, as we are unable to move pabot to Patrick or my server, is it possible to move it to PA.com's server? (Maybe your JohnHaller.com one instead)
