The default search that comes with windows (Search Companion) is rubbish!
It can't even search for files that start with a ".", which is annoying!
I need a portable search companion alternative.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Here's another thread on the same topic. I actually came across this thread using Google. Looks like it has some good ideas in there already.

FYI: Windows search was recently updated...
Looks like Puggle (http://puggle.sourceforge.net/) is the answer.
The update is apparently called Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP (KB940157).

Thanks guys, you've been most helpful.
I took a look at this, it requires files to to be indexed before it will search.
There's also Locate32
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
That's not open source though...
yes it is...

The source is available for all of their stable releases. or if you use the SVN, it has the source for the beta versions as well

Ah so it is, it wasn't very obvious, but then I totally failed to see the "source code" button on the left. I was looking on the downloads page.
Apparently it's BSD license... http://svn.locate32.net/locate32/LICENCE
Is it portable though?
Nice. I was thinking about search tools and Puggle today and the lack of a Puggle update. Thanks for the link.
