I am using Toucan to sync from my Vista Ultimate Laptop to my Western Digital Passport book drive. I use Toucan to sync all my media onto the book drive as a backup. I have all my media in a single folder and then in many sub folders. The total of it all is 110GB (23,000 files).
For starters when I tell Toucan to preview the folder it shows everything as Red, which is wrong. It should only be updating around 50 files. No where near all of them.
Secondly when I right click and say "exclude" nothing changes. I mean how do I know that it is now excluding that file/folder? And how long does this last for? Is it only this job, or what?
The main problem I am having is that it runs incredibly slow! I only have a 5400RPM hard drive on my laptop. I'm not sure of the speed of my book drive, but it is probably the same. But still, I would of expected it to go faster. It has been 30 minutes and it hasn't even gotten through 1/6 of my files. And I don't have anything else significant running in the background. I have Firefox and Microsoft word open.
Another thing is that when I tell it to cancel, it doesn't. Even if I click the button a hundred times (literally) it doesn't respond. Normally if I want to cancel it I have to end it through the task manager. But for some reason my task manager and perfmon won't open right now. Is that related? They were working yesterday, and nothing has changed except a restart.
I like the new interface and features with 2.0, but Toucan seemed to work much better back in the 1.* days. Or is it just me?

exclude files you need to have a set of rules selected so it has somewhere to add them. With regards to it showing all of the files as red which mode did you select, there is a confirmed bug in the preview of the mirror modes, but it shouldn't effect the actuall job. With regards to speed is it going slower than 2.0 or 1.x? As for the cancel button I cannot reproduce this I am afraid, I expect it is linked to the mode you are using, but it should not be stopping task manager popping up, perhaps there is another problem, is the cpu usage very high?
With regards to stability 2.0 is a very new codebase, but I think it is stabilising quite quickly, expect the next release to fix a load more bugs.

I was in update (mirror) mode when the preview didn't work properly. And you are right, the actual job worked properly.
I feel that it's going slower than 1.x. Once it finds a group of files that needs to be copied to my book drive it goes fast. But it takes it forever to scan through the files that don't need to be updated to my book drive.
As for the cancel button issue. I eventually had to do a forced shut down. I lost control over everything. And unfortunately I had no task manager or perfmon up to determine the CPU usage. After a restart, the program went fine, and the cancel button worked.
I have had issues with the cancel button before. When I do differential backups sometimes it appears non responsive. I usually have this problem when it is making a big backup. Either I have a few big files or many medium size files that add up. Recently I ran my routine backup of my documents, but this time I had 9GB of ISOs in them. Toucan worked all night and the progress window hadn't changed a bit. When I forced toucan.exe and 7z.exe to end I discovered that the file was actually several GB. It was working, but it wasn't responding. I think if I had waited long enough it would have finished successfully. Maybe there is something you can do to make it work better with big files in the 7zip modes. I should mention that I was doing max compression, but again it is only a problem when I have large files, or large amounts of them (meaning over a GB).

I shall do some benchmarks, it is probably due to the fact that Toucan now uses MD5 sums rather than timestamps to compare files, I think I shall add in an option in the next version or the one after to allow you to choose, MD5 sums for accuracy or timestamps for speed.
With the cancel button I shall have a look at this again, and max compression will take a long time, I dont have any figures with me but I think we are only talking a couple of hundered meg an hour, I shall verify this though.
