Ok, as a followup to the Release Team I proposed, I think we all have a handle on it now. Now we need members. We needs folks with experience with portable apps who know what to look for. We're going to be establishing some testing guidelines as a community (primarily centered around the PortableApps.com Format Spec and the Installer plus testing for leave-behinds).
So, we need our release team members. They'll be responsible for testing apps at each stage and making suggestions, ensuring compliance, etc. There will be the special mailing list for them as well.
The requirements are simple: good experience using portable apps, at least 1/2 the team must be proficient in NSIS at this stage, must be comfortable using RegShot and looking for changes to the registry and file system (preferably in a virtual clean Windows install in VMWare or similar), attention to detail and enough time to commit to it. the more time our team has, the faster we get apps out.
So, who is interested? If you are, post a comment. Other folks can feel free to reply to those comments with notes of support, etc.

Faronics makes alot of really, really nice programs. Alot of them you can't beat, either. I tried with a buddy of time- he worked for the college, so we were "penetration testing".

i have a second system i can use for just this purpose i might be good at NSIS but im comfortable with reg shot and try out most apps in beta testing

I think you need a portal, where someone can submit their package, it is checked, then put into SF, then start the testing process. Probably need 2 areas, testing and released.
I am willing to help out. Either SF, or testing. I am not an expert in NSIS but I can be.

I'm all up for it, but my main concern would be time-wise, I don't have much free time. However, count me in for now and I'll try and scrounge up some time
Oh, and I can run XP and Vista virtualised (Vista needs to be reset all the time though, due to me not having a dual-license, but I can still run on my main computer), along with Ubuntu and Kubuntu (virtualised) with Wine.

I'm willing and know a bit of NSIS and everything you said above but i dont have "that" much time and i have dialup so i cant test the bigger apps.
but I think I can do it but if I cant thats ok...

VMWare is virtualization software so you can create a 'virtual PC' (run Windows/Linux/Mac within Windows/Linux/Mac). VirtualBox is one of the best open source ones available. VMWare are the same folks who do Thinstall/ThinApp.

I'm in as well. our school is running something like DeepFreeze (cant remember atm due to holidays), so it shouldn't be too hard to get some testing done.

would like to be involved in this; as for testing purposes, unfortunately I don't have an XP/Vista license of my own, so I'm stuck with testing on a "stale" machine. With some apps though that's good, as it can help to show interactions with other software. I can also test under Windows 98 at school, so long as the installer is under ~10MB and is not a game. Come to think of it, due to my conscience, I won't be in on any violent games or things of that sort.

I have experience with NSIS, Regshot and the likes. I have access to clean installs (faronics, VMs) and have had testing experience in the past.
IMHO, this is a great way to speed up the release process. I think that picking five is a little too specific though. I would suggest that 7/8 ish? would be more appropriate, as there's no guarantee that all five will be available to test every time. Maybe once five members of the release team have reviewed it, it gets the thumbs up, instead of everyone on the team having to review it. Any comments on this?

I am setting up my own sf site for PortableFreePCB. This is a big chore, I am sure by the 4th project it will be easier, but I must think there is a better way. PortableApps should centralize.
Anyone know of Assembla.com? I think the projects would proceed much, much faster with a single place to upload, and setup a beta. And a place for the testers to move the betas into release, this really needs to be automated, such that when 3 testers 'sign-off' on a package it is 'released' to the download area (can we do that within sourceforge?).
