bookmarks broken with 3.0.1/3.0.2

I upgraded to 3.0.1, then nearly immediately to 3.0.2 and bookmarks appear to be broken. I cannot create any bookmarks and all my keyword searches are gone. When I open the bookmark manager, all the selections for "New Bookmark", "New Folder", etc are grayed out. I checked all the settings and I can't figure out what's up.

Semi-relatedly, my AwesomeBar does not pull up any saved webpages. Perhaps my profile data got lost somehow? That doesn't really explain why I can't create new bookmarks, though.

Corrupted

Sounds like your bookmarks got corrupted during the upgrade.

This MozillaZine article should help.

Get more aggressive

First, back up your profile using Toucan or some other tool. This is important. I'm assuming that you don't backup already, or you wouldn't be in this pickle, right? Backups are your basic protection from glitches and gremlins, both of which seem to happen more frequently when dealing with removable media.

Two files in your profile hold the active bookmark store - places.sqlite and places.sqlite-journal. If they are corrupted, then you probably can't import anything into them.

With Firefox CLOSED, try renaming those two files to something like places-old.sqlite. Restart Firefox and you should get a clean places file. Then try the import.

Also, check to see what you actually have available - there may be a bookmarks.html file (Firefox 2 format), which you can try to import.

mostly fixed

Thanks for letting me know about Toucan. I shall have to use that more often.

I renamed the places files, and bookmarking seems to have returned. The AwesomeBar seems to have forgotten my history, but it does work now. I have still lost my search keywords, but I can easily put those back.

Thanks for all the help!

edit: I do have a bookmarks.html file, but I don't think it imported the right stuff. I am having overall bookmark management issues (I'm looking at you, Foxmarks), so I'm not too concerned.

Good to hear!

Glad that you have regained some control of the situation.

If you are still having problems, maybe you should consider re-installing FirefoxPortable.

I haven't seen a need to go beyond the standard bookmarks system. Some people want to backup to an internet-based store, so they can access the bookmarks from wherever they might be. To tell you the truth, I don't like the idea of entrusting my personal stuff to somebody else, especially someone I've never met. Anyway, having your stuff with you (privately) wherever you go is the entire premise of having portable applications, right? So why undermine that?
